Seniors continue solid league start

St. Vincents were the opposition on Sunday morning last, in Round 2 of the Cork Credit Unions Football Division 4 tie.

Having held out against Bantry in the opening round, Newmarket aimed to build on the solid start to the league campaign. Despite a slow opening quarter, the home side lead 0-04 to 0-01 on the twenty minute mark through points from Ryan O’Keeffe, Conor O’Keeffe, Barry O’Connor and John Ryan. With scoring at a premium, Newmarket made a vital break-through when Conor O’Keeffe netted a goal on 25 minutes. This provided the home side with some breathing space and they entered the dressing rooms at half time up 1-04 to 0-02.

Newmarket opened the second half the brighter, with a quickfire brace from Barry O’Connor. Ryan O’Keeffe added to the total on 39 minutes, with O’Connor contributing again a minute later. The visitors had no answer and Newmarket led 1-10 to 0-02 with further scores coming from Conor and Ryan O’Keeffe. Entering the last ten minutes, St. Vincents found their way into the home territory, registering their opening scores of the half. It wasn’t enough to impact the contest though and a late brace from Darren O’Keeffe ensured his side secured the points, with a convincing 1-12 to 0-05 win.
