Newmarket’s senior football voyage began with defeat against Dohenys by 2-9 to 0-10 in the Tadhg Crowley Cup quarter final played on a fine January evening at Dunmanway on Sunday.

The sizeable Newmarket support witnessed some sublime football in the opening twenty minutes but a Dohenys goal three minutes prior to the interval proved pivotal to the overall outcome.

Newmarket began in blazing fashion. Nicky Flanagan slotted over the clubs first point at senior level on converting a second minute free with T.J. Bodie doubling the advantage with an excellent effort off his trusty left boot. Dohenys opened their account with a fourth minute free but Newmarket were superb on the heavy surface, playing some sublime, attacking football.

Nicky Flanagan provided the finish to a terrific build up that spanned the length of the pitch involving the outstanding T.J. Brosnan, Tony O’Keeffe and Seanie Francis O’Connor in the fifth minute. The Newmarket attack then reacted fastest when a T.J. Bodie free struck an upright with Eddie Allen and Seanie Francis O’Connor on hand to place John Lane with a pass which he duly clipped between the posts in the eighth minute.

Newmarket stretched their advantage thanks to a T.J. Bodie free from distance before T.J. Brosnan kicked an inspiring point from distance that sailed between the posts after initially involving David O’Flynn and Ian Flanagan in a well worked score. Dohenys kicked their first point from play in the eighteenth minute but Newmarket responded with another memorable score from Tony O’Keeffe with Nicky Flanagan and John Lane providing the link up play, and this left Newmarket with a lead of 0-7 to 0-2 after nineteen minutes of the contest.

As the game entered the final five minutes of play, the home side began to turn matters in their favour as they added their third point of the evening. Crucially, Dohenys found a way through the Newmarket defence on finding the net from close range to cut the deficit to a single point and before the half concluded, Newmarket’s advantage was wiped out in minutes as an equalizing point left the score reading 0-7 to 1-4 at the turnover.

The home side resumed with the impetus and three quickfire points in four minutes established a clear advantage. Newmarket withstood further pressure to surge forward in the ninth minute of the half with Tony O’Keeffe and John Lane splitting the Dohenys rearguard to place Nicky Flanagan in on goal before his effort grazed over the crossbar. The sides then traded points with a T.J. Bodie converted free leaving the score reading 1-8 to 0-9 in Dohenys favour midway through the half.

Conditions took its toll at this stage, as fitness and strength began to flourish in the sapping underfoot terrain. Dohenys established a three point advantage with four minutes remaining and they sealed the contest when a powerful shot found the roof of the net for a second goal. Newmarket completed the scoring thanks to a Nicky Flanagan free but it was Dohenys who progressed to the semi final.

The Newmarket team and scorers…

Nicky Flanagan (0-4), T.J. Bodie (0-3), Tony O’Keeffe (0-1), T.J. Brosnan (0-1), John Lane (0-1).

The Annual General Meeting of Newmarket GAA Club took place in the Clubhouse meeting room on Sunday last. Outgoing chairman Victor Lane welcomed those present before the minutes of the previous years AGM were read and adapted.

Life President, Con Collins in his address reflected on the wonderful year it was for the club in claiming the Premier Intermediate Football Championship and in the process attaining senior status for 2012. He thanked all who contribute to running the club and the community at large for getting right behind the club in the build up to the county final.

Club Secretary, Conor O’Sullivan gave an account of the clubs activities both on and off the field during the year. The obvious highlight of the year was the momentous achievement in winning the county final at Páirc Uí Chaoimh on October 16th, while the junior B football team qualified for the Duhallow championship final in which they were narrowly defeated. Bart Daly was congratulated on winning an All Ireland junior football medal with Cork while T.J. Brosnan lined out for the Cork minor footballers.

Club Treasurer, Neilie McCarthy presented a comprehensive report of the clubs finances which once again provided a very high turnover. He thanked all who subscribe to financing the club and the vital role of the clubs weekly lotto in the clubs overall running.

Outgoing Chairman, Victor Lane paid tribute to fellow club officers and his predecessor Liam Lehane. He thanked numerous people for their help and input during the year. He reflected on the never to be forgotten county final, what a proud day it was for all and the sense of achievement with the vast crowd that greeted the team on their return to Newmarket. He thanked Danny Culloty and fellow selectors, Donal O’Sullivan and Danny Hourigan and said it was fitting that a man of Danny Culloty’s calibre brought the club to senior level. The juvenile and ladies football clubs were commended for their input to the club while club sponsors Newmarket Motors were once more thanked for their generous sponsorship.

Fr. Herlihy addressed the meeting and congratulated the club on its achievement. He said it was a great boost for the parish and what a great honour it is to be playing senior. John Murphy, chairman of the Ladies Football Club and Sean Browne, Juvenile Club Secretary also spoke on behalf of their respective clubs.

County Board Delegate, Nelius Collins reflected on the outstanding achievement, the manner in which victory was attained and the fact that the final was played at Páirc Uí Chaoimh added to the occasion. Nelius then presided over the election of officers for 2012.

The following officers were elected: Club President: Con Collins, Vice Presidents: Ted O’Sullivan, Denis O’Callaghan, Michael Daly, Paddy Hartnett, Dan Joe Daly, Con O’Sullivan, Con O’Shea, Micheál Angland, Liam Lehane, Chairman: Victor Lane, Vice Chairman: Barry O’Leary, Secretary/PRO: Conor O’Sullivan, Assistant Secretary/PRO: Kieran Lehane, Treasurer: Neilie McCarthy, Registrar: Denis Collins, County Board Delegates: Nelius Collins, Oliver Collins, Duhallow Board Delegates: Conor O’Sullivan, John Scanlon, Committee: Tadhg O’Connell, Con Collins, Eamon Moynihan, David Quinlan, Danny O’Flynn, John O’Keeffe, Eileen Lane, Jeremiah Murphy, Liz O’Connor. Under 21 Hurling Selectors: Eamon Moynihan, Danny O’Flynn, Under 21 Football: Peter Foley ( manager), Junior Football: Peter Foley ( manager), Senior Football: Danny Culloty ( manager), Danny Hourigan.

The Newmarket team were awarded with the Corkman/Charleville Park sports star award for the month of October which took its place at the top table along with the Billy Long Cup. Club Chairman, Victor Lane completed the meeting with a prayer for all deceased members.

At the Cork County GAA Convention last Saturday evening, the senior football championship draw for 2012 was being awaited with much anticipation by all within the Newmarket club. The draw pitted Newmarket with a heavy weight contest against one of the most famous and successful clubs in Ireland, let alone within Cork GAA circles, the iconic St. Finbarrs club. A club that has tasted All Ireland club success at senior level in both football and hurling level, it promises to be a much awaited contest come the month of April. Newmarket and St. Finbarrs made acquaintance in 2008 when they contested the County Under 21 Football Final at Páirc Uí Rinn where the city side emerged victors by 1-14 to 1-8. The defeated side will have a second round contest against the losers of the Castlehaven verses Aghada encounter.

Newmarket GAA Club will be running a Victory Celebration Dance on Thursday, December 29th at Hourigan’s Lounge commencing at 9:30pm. Music will be provided by David John & Dave. Tickets are priced at €10 and proceeds will go towards a training fund for the Newmarket team that brought the County Premier Intermediate title to the club last October.

That great day in Newmarket’s history and meant the club would contest Intermediate Football in 1999. Constant improvement at the grade culminated in a final appearance in 2002, only to be defeated by Nemo Rangers. The competition was split in 2006 with the formation of an Intermediate and a Premier Intermediate grade. Newmarket were placed in the latter, due to the Club’s consistent form in the previous years.

The following period brought mixed fortunes, a semi final appearance in 2008, followed by relegation fights in 2009 and 2010.

Then came 2011, which had both relegation and championship battles. It couldn’t get any better. Less than two months ago, Newmarket sealed their place in history and the Senior championship with a fantastic victory in the Premier Intermediate County final.

So, for the first time since 1928, Newmarket will contest the Cork Senior Football Championship in 2012. It has been a bit of a wait, but we are happy to be there!

A typically determined and committed Newmarket display just fell short as Kerry champions Milltown Castlemaine emerged victorious with three points to spare, 1-9 to 1-6 in the Munster Intermediate Football Championship semi final played before a huge attendance, on a grey November, afternoon at the Mallow GAA Sports Complex.

Both sides tried to get the early initiative but both defences stood firm, with Newmarket led from the back by the excellent Denys O’Brien, T.J. Brosnan and Mark Reidy. A tight encounter developed before Newmarket opened the scoring in the eleventh minute. Denys O’Brien burst out from defence and found David O’Flynn with a well placed pass. As David O’Flynn surged forward, he was impeded before offloading quickly to outstanding Newmarket attacker John Lane and the vast majority of the spectators acclaimed an excellently executed point. Newmarket’s advantage was short lived as Milltown Castlemaine gained parity from their resultant kick out. As the game entered the second quarter Milltown Castlemaine edged in front. Scores were at a premium, and despite enjoying a sizeable amount of possession, Newmarket failed to add to their tally despite the exploits of John Lane who was tormenting his opponents with his ball winning ability. Unfortunately, for Newmarket, failure to add on scores in this period would ultimately prove decisive. Milltown Castlemaine added their third point in the twenty third minute before two further points within a minute stretched their advantage to four points. Crucially, as the half entered the final minute of normal time, the Kerry champions surged forward with an overlap and took full advantage to slam a goal to the net for a substantial lead. Newmarket regrouped and in the dying moments of the half, on being awarded a free in, T.J. Bodie struck the first of his afternoon’s points to end the half with Newmarket trailing by 1-5 to 0-2.

Newmarket resumed with the aid of a breeze and as ever their unrivalled support rallied behind their heroes. T.J. Bodie gave an exhibition of free taking and claimed his second point of the hour two minutes into the half. Newmarket pressed their opponents and as in the first half Denys O’Brien, T.J. Brosnan, Mark Reidy and John Lane were central to the sides revival. Milltown Castlemaine converted a free seven minutes into the second half but a spirited Newmarket effort, so evident throughout the year was gaining momentum. T.J. Bodie pointed for a third time before a move that epitomized Newmarket’s work ethic ended with a penalty in their favour. John Lane did sensational work to dispossess a defender on the edge of the square against all the odds and the resultant passage of play involving a Kevin O’Sullivan shot at goal was foot blocked to force a penalty. Once more, as so often before, Brian O’Riordan strode up calmly from his corner back position, to dispatch a perfectly struck penalty to the bottom corner of the net past a static goalkeeper and the stand erupted in appreciation. The score now read 1-6 to 1-4 with seventeen minutes remaining. With everything to play for both sides threw every ounce of effort into the remainder of the game. Milltown Castlemaine pointed next to regain a three point lead. Newmarket swept forward but faced a packed rearguard. T.J. Bodie kicked a memorable point with nine minutes remaining and when he repeated the feat four minutes later, just a solitary point separated the sides. To the frustration of the Newmarket side they could not find an equalizer and at the other end with time closing out, Milltown Castlemaine reacted quicker to a free that struck an upright to score a vital point. As the game entered injury time they added an insurance score and the final whistle brought to an end an incredible Newmarket adventure.

True to form, the magnificent Newmarket supporters applauded and cheered the side from the pitch in appreciation of their epic achievements of 2011. A remarkable campaign of nine championship games in total that exceeded the wildest of expectations will forever be etched into the annals of history and the memory bank of all who witnessed the crusade from Macroom in May to Mallow in November. The exploits of all the players and management will be recalled and treasured for years to come by people both near and far as a spark of inspiration to all Newmarket folk.

Congratulations once again to our magnificent team and management trio of Danny Culloty, Donal O’Sullivan and Danny Hourigan and at the end of a long and winding playing season they can reflect with immense pride on their exploits and what it did and meant to the parish and people of Newmarket. Who will ever forget the scenes and images of October 16th, 2011, the greatest day in the history of Newmarket GAA Club. Well done lads, enjoy the short break and more celebrations of your feats before commencing 2012 as a senior football club.

A point in injury time denied Newmarket and edged Rockchapel to victory in a gripping, exciting, entertaining Duhallow Junior B Football Championship Final played in monsoon conditions at Rockchapel on Sunday afternoon, with the home team emerging champions on a 1-7 to 0-9 scoreline.

The incessant, torrential rain showers that preceded the game ensured terrible playing conditions with lots of water evidence of the appalling playing conditions. The highest of accolades must go to both sides on serving up a highly entertaining encounter in front of a large rain drenched attendance. Newmarket enjoyed a lot of possession in the opening half and their failure to capitalize on the scoreboard was ultimately to their downfall.

Rockchapel pointed the first point of the game in the fifth minute and a brace of frees increased the lead to three points after thirteen minutes. Newmarket failed to make an impact on the scoreboard as six wides were registered during the half and they suffered a huge blow midway through the half when the Rockchapel attack struck for a goal to take their advantage to a sizeable six points.

Newmarket eventually got off the mark in the eighteenth minute with a fine point kicked from distance by John Cronin. Seanie Francis O’Connor pointed a free two minutes later as at last Newmarket found their range. Unfortunately, their downfall of converting possession into scores surfaced again and a potent Rockchapel attack that recorded just a single wide in each half added two points to turn over in front by 1-5 to 0-2.

Newmarket resumed in full flow and hit the ground running. Seanie Francis O’Connor pointed a free within a minute before the influential Brian Daly found the target as Newmarket used the advantage of the wind to full effect. The impressive Michael Kenneally surged forward on one of his several rampaging runs to brilliantly kick a point before substitute Colin Stack made an immediate impact on slotting a point to bring Newmarket to within two points, eight minutes into the half.

Newmarket reigned in ball into their full forward line and once again reaped the benefits following some excellent approach play from Matthew Fitzpatrick and this time Robert Stack was rewarded for his industry by cutting the margin to a solitary point. Seanie Francis O’Connor tied the sides for the first time in the game halfway through the half to complete a superb Newmarket comeback within fifteen minutes.

The crowd were now enthralled and on gaining a free close in on goal, Rockchapel edged ahead again. Newmarket despite all the momentum came up against a resolute Rockchapel defence and this despite the commendable efforts of their own defensive rearguard with team captain Pa O’Brien and Anthony Crowley leading from the back. Seanie Francis O’Connor restored parity with eight minutes remaining to ensure a nail biting conclusion and warm proceedings even more on a truly gloomy afternoon.

Both sides gave every ounce of energy into crossing the victory line but both defences stood up to the task in the telling conditions. As the game entered injury time both sides had chances but ultimately it was Rockchapel who snatched victory to bring an excellent contest to a conclusion to the agony of a brave Newmarket team.

The Newmarket team and scorers…

Seanie Francis O’Connor (0-4), Michael Kenneally (0-1), Robert Stack (0-1), Brian Daly (0-1), John Cronin (0-1), Colin Stack (0-1).

Newmarket – Cork County Intermediate Football Champions 2011!!!! Over 7,000 spectators witnessed the most momentous, memorable, historic occasion in Newmarket GAA Club in the mecca of Cork GAA, Pairc Ui Chaoimh on a truly unforgettable day, Sunday, October 16th, 2011. Twenty seven heroes and a management trio of the already legendary Danny Culloty, Donal O’Sullivan and Danny Hourigan are etched into folklore forever more. What a momentous day for everybody lucky enough to witness a perfect day as Newmarket captured the Billy Long Cup for the first time and scaled the heights to senior club status on defeating the formidable Clyda Rovers by 3-6 to 1-10.

The splendid weather conditions and awesome Newmarket support ensured the players took to the field in ideal circumstances. The magnificent John Lane settled early nerves and stamped his authority and class on proceedings by skilfully blitzing his opponents to punch a point in the fourth minute. A well fancied Clyda Rovers side showed their immense calibre by responding with three points in the following five minutes.

Bart Daly struck an unforgettable placed ball from over fifty yards for Newmarket’s second point in the eleventh minute. Newmarket were rewarded for their trademark teamwork and slick passing game in the fourteenth minute as the ever industrious David O’Flynn was impeded as he closed in on goal and a penalty was awarded. Brian O’Riordan strode up from his corner back position and as he has done so regularly and consistently in his career to date dispatched a perfect kick to the corner of the net to the raptures of the black and red brigade.

Clyda playing with the aid of a significant breeze recovered and in the twentieth minute a probing ball on the edge of the square was flicked to the net past an otherwise miserly Newmarket rearguard. Clyda established a two point advantage but Newmarket remained composed led from the back by club stalwarts Denys O’Brien, Barry O’Leary and Mark Reidy. Newmarket received the perfect tonic prior to the interval in the twenty seventh minute of the contest as Bart Daly delivered a dangerous ball into the goalmouth and the excellent Kevin O’Sullivan was on hand to pick up the break and crash the ball home to the roof of the net. This ensured Newmarket went into the break leading by 2-2 to 1-4.

Despite now playing with the advantage of the wind, it was Clyda Rovers who resumed the sharper side and two points within four minutes swung the scoreboard in their favour. The championships top scorer Nicky Flanagan ensured parity seven minutes into the half as a gripping skilful encounter progressed. Clyda Rovers edged ahead again eleven minutes into the half before another club legend Tony O’Keeffe rewarded an efficient Newmarket forward unit on pointing an equalizing point with twelve minutes remaining. Newmarket seized the initiative at this stage of a long rewarding campaign as their remarkable fitness and teamwork bore fruition in their finest hour. Nicky Flanagan edged Newmarket in front as the game entered the final ten minutes.

Seven minutes from time the dream was becoming reality when John Lane once again provided the spark and closing in on goal from a difficult angle he expertly placed a pass into the danger zone and the predatory Tony O’Keeffe was on hand to provide the finishing touch and the net bulged for a third time to the euphoria of the majority of patrons at the famous sporting venue. True to form Clyda Rovers dispelled the comfort of a four point margin on halving the deficit within a couple of minutes to ensure a compelling conclusion. Newmarket’s exemplary discipline and composure engineered a critical free and T.J. Bodie perfectly bisected the posts with an inspirationally struck left footed kick from underneath the covered stand.

As so often throughout the campaign the Newmarket rearguard answered the ominous onslaught and as the gap was reduced to two points, Newmarket support endured a painstaking wait for the final whistle. The resultant kick out proved to be final act of a truly remarkable fairytale as the field became engulfed in a sea of black and red in acknowledgement of their heroes who had just added the proudest chapter in the history of Newmarket GAA Club.

The most worthy of team captains, Barry O’Leary, an inspirational clubman, five years on from suffering an horrific career threatening injury overcome solely for his incredible affection for Newmarket GAA Club rightfully took his place on the podium of Páirc Uí Chaoimh and graciously accepted the cup amidst unforgettable scenes.

The team were greeted to incredible support led by the ever obliging and appreciated Newmarket Pipe Band amongst historic images at the West End. Club Chairman Victor Lane, Fr. Herlihy, Richard Murphy (Chairman, Duhallow Board), Tony McAuliffe (Duhallow Board), Danny Culloty and Barry O’Leary reflected on the remarkable success story before John Cronin capped the proceedings with a perfect rendition of our famous anthem Up Up Newmarket!!!. Congratulations to one and all.

The Newmarket team and scorers…

Tony O’Keeffe (1-1), Kevin O’Sullivan (1-0), Brian O’Riordan (1-0), Nicky Flanagan (0-2), Bart Daly (0-1), T.J. Bodie (0-1), John Lane (0-1)

The five week wait is almost over and the build up has reached fever pitch as the Newmarket team take their place in the County Premier Intermediate Football Championship Final at Páirc Uí Chaoimh on Sunday next at 2pm.

A long season of training and games which commenced with a league visit to Mayfield on February 20th will culminate on the biggest date in the Cork County football calendar in the home of Cork GAA.

It is the club’s second time in reaching a County Intermediate Football Final having previously contested the 2002 final on September 15th at Macroom where they had to settle as runners up to Nemo Rangers on a scoreline of 2-9 to 0-10. There are four members of today’s team that lined out on that occasion, team captain Barry O’Leary (also captain in 2002), Denys O’Brien, David O’Flynn and Tony O’Keeffe. Team coach Danny Culloty was also a member of that team while fellow selector Donal O’Sullivan was also in the squad.

The Newmarket team on that occasion was James Morgan, Dermot O’Reilly, Dan Murphy, Dermot Moynihan, Barry O’Leary (captain), John McSweeney, John Fitzpatrick, Jerry McCarthy (0-1), Denys O’Brien (0-1), Mark O’Sullivan (0-5), Michael Cottrell (0-1), David O’Flynn, Tony O’Keeffe (0-1), Danny Culloty, Seanie Francis O’Connor (0-1). SUBS: Michael O’Keeffe, Gerard Sheahan, John Cronin, James Cashman.

Newmarket have also contested four county finals at junior level in 1927, 1950, 1970 and 1998, emerging victorious on the latter two occasions. Many of the present squad were members of the minor football team that contested county championship and league finals in 2005, claiming the county league final and also made the county under 21 football championship final of 2008 on September 28th against St. Finbarrs at Pairc Ui Rinn.

Newmarket and final opponents Clyda Rovers met in the championship last season, in a second round contest played at Banteer on June 19th, which ended in favour of Clyda by 0-14 to 1-8 ( half time 0-6 to 0-4).

The Newmarket lineout on that night was Niall O’Connor, Kevin O’Connor, Mark Murphy, Brian O’Riordan, Barry O’Leary, Timothy Murphy, Sean Doody, Denys O’Brien, Bart Daly (0-2), David O’Flynn (0-1), Maurice Feehan, Mark Reidy (1-0), John Ryan (0-4), Tony O’Keeffe, John Lane (0-1). SUBS: Kevin O’Sullivan, T.J. Bodie, Seanie Francis O’Sullivan, Colin O’Sullivan, Anthony Crowley.

The sides most recent encounter was a league game played in Newmarket on July 24th, which ended all square, 0-14 to 2-8 ( half time 0-8 to 2-5).

The Newmarket team on that occasion was David Quinlan, Sean Doody, Denys O’Brien, Brian O’Riordan, Barry O’Leary, Timothy Murphy, John Ryan, Colin O’Sullivan, Gerard Casey, Tony O’Keeffe (0-1), Kevin O’Sullivan (0-1), David O’Flynn, John Lane (0-3), Nicky Flanagan (0-2), T.J. Bodie (0-7). SUBS: Bart Daly, Mark Reidy, Matthew Fitzpatrick, Kevin O’Connor, Michael O’Leary.

Newmarket qualified for the final of the Duhallow Junior B Football championship following a big home semi final victory over St. John’s by 2-17 to 1-2 in blustery conditions on Sunday.

Newmarket’s ace marksman Seanie Francis O’Connor mastered the tricky conditions by expertly judging two well struck pointed frees in the opening five minutes. Mattie Fitzpatrick was in outstanding form throughout as the Newmarket defence dominated but up front several scoring opportunities were squandered as eight wides were recorded during the half.

A terrific crossfield pass by Seanie Francis O’Connor found Robert Stack in the fourteenth minute and the influential corner forward found the target with a well struck left foot kick. Some well worked link play enabled John Cronin to score his first point of the afternoon before Eddie Allen gave Newmarket a five point lead by the eighteenth minute.

St. John’s opened their account with a point in the twentieth minute but the rest of the half failed to produce a score despite several openings and Newmarket turned over in front by 0-5 to 0-1 at the half time whistle.

Four minutes into the second half as Eddie Allen closed in on goal he was upended by a defender and he went on to slot the resultant free over the crossbar. Centre half back and team captain Kevin O’Connor stormed forward on one of many solo runs before blasting a point a minute later before Seanie Francis O’Connor stretched the lead to seven points. Newmarket were now in full flow with Seanie Francis O’Connor dictating the attack. He blitzed through the defensive rearguard to place Brian Daly in on goal and despite his goalbound shot being smothered, Robert Stack was on hand to finish the rebound to the corner of the net from close range.

Jonathan Flaherty was next to get on the scoreboard with an excellent point before a second Newmarket goal followed. On this occasion it was Kevin O’Connor that burst through the middle and once again Brian Daly was thwarted on finding the net but this time John Cronin supplied the finishing touch. Seanie Francis O’Connor added two sublime points before St. John’s pointed midway through the half to leave the score reading 2-11 to 0-2.

John Cronin superbly pointed twice within a minute before once more Seanie Francis O’Connor stamped his class on the contest with his sixth point of the hour. Eddie Allen and John Cronin added to their increasing individual tallies before St. John’s blasted home a goal with five minutes remaining. Jerry McCarthy clipped over the final point of the game as Newmarket now progress to a final date against Rockchapel.

The Newmarket team and scorers…

John Cronin (1-4), Seanie Francis O’Connor (0-6), Robert Stack (1-1), Eddie Allen (0-3), Kevin O’Connor (0-1), Jonathan Flaherty (0-1), Jerry McCarthy (0-1).

A late goal by impressive substitute Michael Cottrell ensured a dramatic victory for Newmarket’s minor footballers by 1-13 to 2-8 in an entertaining league game against Mallow at Newmarket on Sunday evening.

Newmarket were on the scoreboard in the first minute thanks to a huge effort from Daniel Culloty before Gavin Forde raced in on goal and punched a second point in the sixth minute.

Mallow had their first point in the eighth minute before the prolific Barry O’Connor scored a neatly taken point midway through the half. Mallow had a couple of goal chances that narrowly missed the Newmarket net but they made no mistake when netting in the sixteenth minute. Daniel Culloty restored parity before Barry O’Connor edged the home side in front by a point after twenty minutes.

Mallow found the net for a second time but Newmarket responded with a fine individual point from industrious midfielder Jonathan Flaherty. Mallow finished the half with two points and they turned over in front by 2-3 to 0-6.

A fine Mallow side stretched their advantage upon the resumption with two points in four minutes. Daniel Culloty kept Newmarket in touch on pointing a free before Mallow restored their five point advantage, seven minutes into the half. Barry O’Connor punched a point following some excellent approach play before Gavin Forde pointed superbly from a forty five to leave the score at 2-6 to 0-9.

Mallow were next to score but once again Barry O’Connor was unerring on scoring his fourth point of the game midway through the half.

Newmarket came agonizingly close to finding the net on a couple of occasions, however they were indebted to substitute goalkeeper Eoin O’Connell for producing an outstanding save in preventing a near certain goal.

Mallow took their lead to four points with what proved to be their final score of the game, but once again Barry O’Connor kept the scoreboard ticking over for Newmarket with two points within a minute.

Now within two points and needing a victory to ensure qualification to the semi finals, Newmarket stepped up the momentum but saw a number of opportunities go wide. Michael Cottell was proving a handful to the Mallow defenders and Daniel Culloty brought Newmarket back to just a point in arrears on slotting over a free with little over two minutes remaining.

The vital breakthrough arrived in the next attack with Jonathan Flaherty placing Michael Cottell in possession and his shot found the net to the raptures of his team mates and bench. Newmarket held on to claim an excellent win that was borne out of some great all round determination and never say die attitude.

The Newmarket team and scorers…

Barry O’Connor (0-6), Daniel Culloty (0-4), Michael Cottrell (1-0), Gavin Forde (0-2), Jonathan Flaherty (0-1).

Newmarket completed their intermediate league campaign and preparations for the upcoming Premier Intermediate Football Championship final with a well earned victory away to Mallow by 1-13 to 2-5 on Tuesday night.

Rain showers that preceded the game made for a slippery surface and initially the home side adapted better with a point after four minutes. Newmarket settled and were buoyed by a great move in the eighth minute which led to an excellent goal. Colin O’Sullivan drilled a pass forward into the path of Nicky Flanagan who quickly offloaded to Tony O’Keeffe and in turn he found John Lane, who side stepped the advancing goalkeeper to slip the ball into an empty net.

Nicky Flanagan converted a twelfth minute free as Newmarket found their rhythm. Denys O’Brien and Mark Reidy led in defence as several moves swept the length of the pitch. Newmarket eventually found their scoring touch in the final ten minutes of the half. Bart Daly converted a forty five before John Lane cut through the Mallow defence to punch a point. T.J. Bodie’s accuracy was unerring on the night and he kicked over his first point with a well taken score in the twenty fourth minute. Nicky Flanagan and Kevin O’Sullivan increased the advantage before a memorable score completed Newmarket’s tally for the half. Mark Reidy instigated a move deep in defence with Colin O’Sullivan, T.J. Brosnan and Nicky Flanagan involved in setting up T.J. Bodie to kick an excellent point.

Mallow ended the half with a point but Newmarket turned over from a productive display with a lead of 1-7 to 0-2.

Newmarket drove forward immediately upon the throw in and as Kevin O’Sullivan advanced in on goal he laid the ball off to T.J. Bodie to once again bisect the posts with a fine score. A minute later, Newmarket had to call upon goalkeeper Niall O’Conner to produce an excellent stop with Brian O’Riordan helping the resultant rebound to safety. Newmarket stretched their advantage thanks to points from T.J. Bodie and Nicky Flanagan as they enjoyed an eleven point lead, ten minutes into the second half.

Mallow struck for a goal in the following minute but the clinical Nicky Flanagan ensured a lead of 1-11 to 1-2 midway through the half. Mallow finished the game strongly. A quickly taken free was dispatched to the net eleven minutes from time and two further points brought the deficit to four points with six minutes remaining. Nicky Flanagan scored a point to quell the comeback but Newmarket were grateful to substitute goalkeeper David Quinlan who produced a stunning save to spread himself and thwart a certain goal when one on one with an advancing attacker.

The excellent Denys O’Brien drove a ball in the direction of John Lane who did superbly to split the Mallow rearguard and kick over Newmarket’s final score on the night. Mallow did have the final score but Newmarket ended victors and now all talk and roads will lead to Pairc Uí Chaoimh and a historic county final appearance against Clyda Rovers on October 16th.

The Newmarket team and scorers…

Nicky Flanagan (0-5), John Lane (1-2), T.J. Bodie (0-4), Bart Daly (0-1), Kevin O’Sullivan (0-1).
