Newmarket’s junior hurlers lose out to Banteer in an entertaining and well contested game played in fine conditions at Banteer on Monday evening, a late return of three points sealing a 0-18 to 1-11 victory for the home side.

Newmarket playing with the aid of a slight breeze took the lead in the second minute with a well taken point from John Lane. Banteer equalized in the fifth minute before Anthony Crowley edged Newmarket in front again in the ninth minute with a superb point from long distance. From the resultant puckout, Anthony Crowley tried his luck again from long range and as another fine effort struck the upright, John Lane reacted fastest before being hauled to the ground to earn a penalty. Anthony Crowley’s resultant effort was pointed and John Lane continued a productive spell for Newmarket by scoring another excellent point in the eleventh minute.

Banteer added a second point but John Lane was on target from a free to give Newmarket a lead of 0-5 to 0-2 after thirteen minutes play. Banteer earned their way back into the game and three points in as many minutes had the sides level for a second time after seventeen minutes. A second penalty of the half was awarded to the home side on twenty minutes, but Newmarket held out as Paudie Allen brilliantly stopped and controlled the goal bound shot.

Newmarket, with Gavin Forde outstanding in defence, ably assisted by Robert and Brendan Stack withstood the Banteer period of pressure and Donnacha Fitzpatrick who impressed at the other end, created and executed another well taken point. Banteer replied before the half time whistle and the sides turned over at the end of a free flowing entertaining thirty minutes, level on 0-6 apiece.

Newmarket were soon off the mark after the restart as the quick reactions of Michael Kenneally yielded a point within seconds. Banteer were again on level terms by the third minute and they took the lead for the first time of the night as they added a further four points by the tenth minute of the half. A superb individual point from the sideline by John Ryan cut the deficit to three points, 0-11 to 0-8 after twelve minutes.

The sides traded points midway through the half with John Lane on target from a free for Newmarket. Another brace of Banteer points stretched their advantage to five points but Newmarket received a significant boost with ten minutes remaining. Gavin Forde fizzed a dangerously flighted free goal wards and the sliother nestled into the top corner of the net. Banteer replied with a point but a rejuvenated Newmarket maintained their challenge and the superb Gavin Forde added to his stock by converting two long range frees which left just a solitary point between the sides with three minutes remaining.

However, it was Banteer who finished strongest and in the ascendancy as three quick fire points dispelled any hope of a Newmarket result and the home side claimed a well earned win.

The Newmarket team and scorers…

Gavin Forde (1-2), John Lane (0-4), Anthony Crowley (0-2), John Ryan (0-1), Donnacha Fitzpatrick (0-1), Michael Kenneally (0-1).

Newmarket were defeated in their initial outing of the Evening Echo Senior Football Championship at Mallow on Saturday evening, where a devastating display and scoring return in the final quarter by St. Finbarrs gave the city team a commanding and clear cut victory by 0-17 to 0-6. The final scoreline was harsh and scant reward on a Newmarket performance which kept them in touch up until the closing fifteen minutes, when their illustrious opponents stormed to the finish with an array of outstanding points.

It all began well for Newmarket and despite a couple of early wides, a loud cheer from the sizeable attendance greeted a well struck T.J. Bodie point in the fourth minute, which was fashioned by the input of Conor Cronin and the lively John Lane. St. Finbarrs levelled on pointing in the seventh minute but Newmarket were in front for a second time in their next attack with impressive debutant Paudie Allen, T.J. Bodie and John Lane involved before Seanie Francis O’Connor kicked a fine point from distance. The sides were level for a second time after thirteen minutes and a more clinical St. Finbarrs outfit began to turn the screw as they reeled off four more points in succession to establish a lead after twenty one minutes.

Newmarket were guilty of missing a string of scoring opportunities during the half in which they had a tally of eight wides.

Enjoying a period of dominance, Newmarket struck three wides before Kevin O’Sullivan found the target after a well placed kick pass from Timothy Murphy. Tellingly, St. Finbarrs went up the pitch from the resultant kick out and pointed to nullify Newmarket’s well earned score.

The half finished with T.J. Bodie finding the target from a free and the sides turned over with St. Finbarrs in front by 0-7 to 0-4 after an entertaining opening period.

Newmarket resumed with John Lane pointing in style for a well deserved personal point, with Timothy Murphy again supplying a telling pass in the build up, in the second minute. Five minutes into the half St. Finbarrs cut open the Newmarket defence and a powerful goal bound shot was saved in stunning fashion by David Quinlan in the goal to boost his team mates and the Newmarket contingent in the stand. However, it was St. Finbarrs who began to take a stranglehold on the contest and they added four points in seven minutes to lead by 0-11 to 0-5 midway through the half.

T.J. Bodie pointed next for Newmarket but again they failed to add to their tally when in favourable attacking positions. In contrast, St. Finbarrs showed little mercy and their quality surfaced more and more as the game developed.

A hard working Newmarket defence were now being forced to work overtime as St. Finbarrs dominated. The city side went on to register another three points to their increasing tally. Newmarket competed to the end and were offered a flicker of hope six minutes from time as John Lane was upended in the square, but the resultant penalty was well stopped by the St. Finbarrs custodian and the city side cemented their win with another three unanswered points.

Newmarket must now regroup and face Aghada in the second round in mid June.

The Newmarket team and scorers…

T.J. Bodie (0-3), Seanie Francis O’Connor (0-1), John Lane (0-1), Kevin O’Sullivan (0-1).

Newmarket ‘s senior footballers rounded off a busy spell of league games with another victory from the long journey to Adrigole by 1-10 to 0-11, on a sunny Sunday afternoon in the Beara peninsula.

Newmarket made a flying start to the contest as T.J. Bodie and John Lane pointed. Newmarket strengthened their position when David O’Flynn finished off a fine flowing move in style by surging past the centre of the defence to finish coolly into the bottom corner of the net. Adrigole responded with their first two points of the afternoon. T.J. Bodie pointed for a second time as the sides exchanged the next couple of points. Newmarket increased their advantage going into the interval as points from Kevin O’Sullivan and John Lane left the score line at 1-5 to 0-3.

Two Adrigole points cut the deficit to a clear goal before the impressive David O’Flynn and T.J. Bodie from a free re-established Newmarket’s five point cushion. The home side added another brace of points with John Ryan getting forward to kick an excellent point from the right hand side for Newmarket. Adrigole made further inroads into the lead with two points in succession as the gap was reduced to two points. John Lane kept Newmarket on the front foot with a vital third point but Adrigole answered again with a point. The scoring concluded in a similar manner, as again, Newmarket’s talisman John Lane was on hand to register an important point before the home side finished with the final score of the game. As the game concluded Newmarket held on to go top of Division 3 on ten points from six league outings.

The Newmarket team and scorers…

John Lane (0-4), David O’Flynn (1-1), T.J. Bodie (0-3), Kevin O’Sullivan (0-1), John Ryan (0-1)

Newmarket, despite defeat, put in a very commendable performance away to Rockchapel in the Ducon Cup on Tuesday evening, where the home side emerged with victory from a high scoring contest by 1-16 to 1-10.

Newmarket got a dream start as Kevin O’Connor found the Rockchapel net within two minutes of the throw in. Daniel Culloty pointed his first point of a phenomenal personal performance in the fourth minute. Rockchapel wiped out the deficit in a matter of minutes as after pointing in the fifth minute they struck for an eighth minute equalizing goal. Indeed, Newmarket failed to register another score while Rockchapel went on to record seven points which proved crucial as the game unfolded. The half time score read 1-8 to 1-2 in favour of Rockchapel.

The second half proved even all the way in terms of scoring. Nicky Flanagan answered an early Rockchapel point. The home side added a brace to their tally but Daniel Culloty kept Newmarket in touch with his third and fourth points of the evening. Nicky Flanagan had Newmarket’s next score as the home side led by 1-12 to 1-6 midway through the half. The sides shared another eight points between them before the conclusion, as Nicky Flanagan and another trio of points from play from the outstanding Daniel Culloty accounted for Newmarket’s scoring on the night.

Newmarket enter the fray of senior championship football at Mallow next Saturday evening, May 5th and a historic fixture for the club against St. Finbarrs at 7pm.

Newmarket return to the same venue where their remarkable championship crusade of 2011 ended last November in the Munster Intermediate Semi Final against eventual All Ireland champions, Milltown Castlemaine of Kerry. However, the reward for county championship success is now a tilt at the senior grade.

Newmarket enter the contest on the back of good league form recording five wins from six outings in Division 3, however they will face a stern examination against Division 1 side and championship aristocrats St. Finbarrs. Newmarket’s preparations haven’t been helped due to a growing injury list, exam and work commitments, but a well prepared team will enter the dawn of a new era for the club.

An outstanding first half display in dreadful weather conditions, enabled Newmarket’s minor hurlers fashion an impressive home league victory over Kilworth by 5-17 to 1-11 at Newmarket on Thursday evening.

Lots of surface water, driving rain and a cold breeze made for the most trying of conditions, as Newmarket got off to an ideal start with Gavin Forde striking a monstrous wind assisted free straight between the posts within the first minute. Donal Hannon and Jonathan Flaherty reeled over two fine points in the next couple of minutes, before Kilworth replied with a brace of points.

Newmarket began to dominate and six points, each of fantastic quality resulted as Gavin Forde, Daniel Doherty, Barry O’Connor (twice), Donal Hannon and Jonahthan Flaherty gave the home side a tally of nine points midway through the half. Newmarket’s supremacy grew as did their overall performance despite the awful conditions.

The opening goal came after seventeen minutes with Eoin O’Connell driving a well directed ball out of defence and Jonathan Flaherty combined with Daniel O’Doherty as Donal Hannon made the most of the opportunity to tap the ball home from close range. Donal Hannon pointed a free before Jonathan Flaherty capped a superb display with another fantastic solo point.

Kilworth found a response with a point but a rampant Newmarket were relentless as talisman Donal Hannon drove home a bullet like free to the net and three further points before the break, as Newmarket built up a 2-14 to 0-3 interval advantage.

Kilworth resumed brightly and quickly knocked over a point with a goal for good measure. The potent Donal Hannon completed a hat trick of goals in the fifth minute before Adrian Carroll pointed in style. Kilworth added two points but Donal Hannon answered in similar fashion as his personal tally soared. A battling Kilworth hit three points in succession but Barry O’Connor goaled for Newmarket to nullify their response.

Newmarket rounded off their scoring with yet another Donal Hannon goal who accounted for four goals and eight points, before Kilworth finished the game with the last two points of a high scoring contest.

The Newmarket team and scorers…

Donal Hannon (4-8), Barry O’Connor (1-2), Jonathan Flaherty (0-3), Gavin Forde (0-2), Daniel O’Doherty (0-1), Adrian Carroll (0-1).

Millstreet overturned a half time deficit as two second half goals denied Newmarket by 2-11 to 0-13 in the junior hurling league tie played at Millstreet on Wednesday evening.

The home side were sharper at the outset and playing with the aid of a fairly strong breeze they went into a two point lead after six minutes. Newmarket hurled very well in the first half and in the eighth minute they got on the scoreboard with Nicky Flanagan creating an opening which John Lane blasted over the crossbar. At the other end Shane McAuliffe made a superb save from point blank range and Newmarket built on the notable displays of Robert Stack, Brendan Stack, Alan Ryan and Gavin Forde.

John Lane was in outstanding form and by the end of the first quarter he added three additional points for Newmarket, two from placed balls with another well taken point from play.

Millstreet struck a point but a fluent Newmarket outfit maintained the upper hand with another three points stretching the lead to 0-7 to 0-3 by the twenty first minute. John Lane added two of these points in between a fantastic point from Michael Kenneally who fielded a puckout from Shane McAuliffe, drove forward on a solo run and dispatched a fine shot over the bar. Millstreet put on the pressure towards the end of the half but the Newmarket rearguard maintained their fine form as two points from the home side ensured a half time advantage for Newmarket of 0-7 to 0-5.

Newmarket resumed with the breeze, which dipped in influence as the game progressed. Three minutes into the half a fine clearance from defence by Brendan Stack was flicked on superbly by Michael Kenneally to Barry O’Leary who hit a wonderful point from distance to stretch the Newmarket lead to three points. Millstreet replied with two points before John Lane picked up possession on the wing and found space to drive over a Newmarket point in the ninth minute. Millstreet cut the deficit to a point with a pointed free, before midway through the half they made their growing pressure count on eventually finding a way past Newmarket’s impressive goalkeeper Shane McAuliffe for a crucial opening goal. Another Millstreet point gave them a three point cushion but John Lane kept Newmarket on their tails with yet another point.

Millstreet restored a three point advantage but an inspirational solo point from Jonathan Flaherty and a John Lane free left just a solitary point in the difference with six minutes remaining. Millstreet found the extra gear required to get over the finish line as a point and a second goal all but put paid to a gallant Newmarket performance. Newmarket pushed hard to the end and before the conclusion John Lane added his tenth point of the night but it was Millstreet who collected the spoils at the final whistle.

The Newmarket team and scorers…

John Lane (0-10), Barry O’Leary (0-1), Jonathan Flaherty (0-1), Michael Kenneally (0-1)

Newmarket’s senior footballers travelled the short distance to Ballydesmond for their latest league encounter and emerged with a win by 0-11 to 0-5 from a rather mundane affair on Saturday evening against their fellow Duhallow counterparts.

Newmarket enjoyed early territorial advantage and pointed for the first time in the fifth minute from a well struck effort by T.J. Bodie. Two minutes later Kevin O’Sullivan was on hand to collect a pass from John Lane and he made no mistake on finding the target. Newmarket engineered an opening in the Ballydesmond defence in the eleventh minute as John Lane drew several opponents before punching to T.J. Bodie as he placed Nicky Flanagan in on goal but he had little time as his shot was well smothered by the home custodian. Newmarket did however record a score from the resultant forty five, as Kevin O’Sullivan drilled the placed ball between the posts.

T.J. Bodie stretched the lead to four points after initial link up play involving Kevin O’Sullivan and John Lane. Ballydesmond opened their account midway through the half as Newmarket’s mounting injury list added another casualty when the impressive Colin O’Sullivan had to depart the action. David O’Flynn added Newmarket’s fifth point on seventeen minutes as Kevin O’Sullivan and Timothy Murphy contributed to the build up. Nicky Flanagan added another point on converting a free, five minutes before the interval as the scoring rate dipped in the second quarter. Ballydesmond ended the half in the ascendancy and a second point left them trailing by 0-6 to 0-2 at the turnover.

It was again the fifth minute of the half before the first score was recorded and it came courtesy of John Lane who did well to find the target from a wide position on the right wing. T.J. Bodie then pointed a free as the sides traded points at either end within a minute. The attacking element of the game dropped in standard with Denys O’Brien a colossus in defence for Newmarket and Sean Doody also prominent throughout the hour. Ballydesmond made inroads into the margin as two points left the score at 0-8 to 0-5 with just over ten minutes remaining. Newmarket ended a fifteen minute spell without a score as Barry O’Leary seized on loose possession and found T.J. Bodie who did superbly to point a much needed score for his side.

Newmarket’s top scorer on the night T.J. Bodie recorded his fifth point on pointing a free as Newmarket finished strongly. The final moments saw John Lane adding an insurance point from a free as Newmarket returned home with the win.

The Newmarket team and scorers…

T.J. Bodie (0-5), Kevin O’Sullivan (0-2), John Lane (0-2), David O’Flynn (0-1), Nicky Flanagan (0-1)

Newmarket went down at home to Freemount in their second junior hurling league game of the season on a sunny Sunday afternoon by 1-18 to 1-6.

Newmarket began brightly with the vision of Barry O’Leary picking out John Lane with a crossfield pass and he found the target for the first point of the game after three minutes. It got better for Newmarket in the seventh minute with Barry O’Leary again central in finding Ian Flanagan in space and he again supplied the perfect execution between the posts. Freemount were wayward with their shooting but once they found the range with a point in the eighth minute, they quickly gained parity two minutes later.

Newmarket’s overall game deteriorated despite the excellent efforts of Gavin Forde, Alan Ryan and Kevin O’Sullivan. Freemount took a foothold and dominated possession and territory during the second quarter. Four points followed in a five minute spell before Newmarket’s resolute defence was beaten for a Freemount goal after twenty two minutes. Newmarket, like their opponents, began to run up a tally of wides but the visitors faster brand of hurling accounted for another four points in succession.

Freemount well on top, went into the break with a lead of 1-10 to 0-2.

Matters got worse for Newmarket, as despite a concerted effort, Freemount pulled further ahead courtesy of three points in eight minutes. Newmarket got a lucky break moments later when a John Lane free from distance ended nestling in the back of the Freemount net. Freemount replied with a point but Newmarket revived their challenge with a noticeable improvement all over the field. Robert Stack led from the back as the youthful Paudie Allen, Alan Ryan and Gavin Forde provided positive contributions. John Lane went on to add three points in succession at the other end with the third effort coming from play. The visitors were more clinical in the second half and reeled off three points in a row to quell the Newmarket revival. The sides went on to share a final two points with John Lane on target for Newmarket but Freemount ended comprehensive winners.

The Newmarket team and scorers…

John Lane (1-5), Ian Flanagan (0-1)

Newmarket’s minor hurlers commenced their league campaign with a narrow defeat, against Cuchulainns by 2-11 to 1-10 in a well contested game at Kanturk on Thursday evening.

The home side settled the quicker and two converted frees gave them an early advantage. Newmarket opened their account with an excellent point from Tadhg Ryan in the sixth minute. Cuchulainns found a way past Newmarket’s fine goalkeeper Shane McAuliffe for the first goal of the game and a point increased their advantage to five points after nine minutes of play.

Newmarket improved steadily as the game progressed and two pointed frees by Tadhg Ryan was reward for their efforts. Cuchulainns were next to score but Adrian Carroll replied with a well taken point for Newmarket. Cuchulainns again took their lead to four points, but Newmarket struck for a well worked goal in the twenty first minute. Jonathan Flaherty took off on a superb rampaging run towards goal before off loading to Adrian Carroll who made no mistake with a well drilled shot past the home side’s custodian. The sides were level for the first time as Tadhg Ryan found the target with an outstanding point from a difficult angle and the teams went into the interval level on 1-5 apiece.

Cuchulainns resumed with a point within seconds before Danny O’Connell replied with an equalizer for Newmarket three minutes later. The next score proved crucial as Cuchulainns found the net for a second time and two further points strengthened their position. Donal Hannon was introduced for Newmarket and he made an immediate impact on pointing two frees, which left the score reading 2-8 to 1-8 entering the final ten minutes. Cuchulainns found an extra gear and three unanswered points doubled their lead. Newmarket competed admirably to the end and despite not finding the net after a few close attempts, another brace of Donal Hannon points kept the outcome interesting to the conclusion.

The Newmarket team and scorers…

Adrian Carroll (1-1), Tadhg Ryan (0-4), Donal Hannon (0-4), Danny O’Connell (0-1).

The season ended in a most disappointing manner for the Robert Emmets under 21 football team, when they went down to a heavy defeat in the Duhallow under 21 B football championship final by 2-11 to 0-4 against Boherbue at Dromtariffe on Tuesday evening.

Forced to line out without a couple of key players the Newmarket/Lismire combination competed valiantly until to end but other injuries on the night also took their toll as Boherbue swept home to victory.

The opening exchanges were tight before Boherbue scored the first point of the evening on converting an eighth minute free. Four minutes later, a surging Boherbue move exploited space in the Robert Emmets defence and some fine interchanging of passes ended with a shot which gave goalkeeper David Quinlan no chance in the goal. Boherbue went on to add another point before Robert Emmets ace marksman Daniel Culloty took his first point of the night in impressive manner. Boherbue posed several problems and a lively attacking unit combined well to add a further three points. Robert Emmets concluded the half with a second point which owed much to the industrious Barry O’Connor who supplied possession to Eddie Allen and he kept his composure to kick a well taken point. This left Boherbue with an advantage of 1-5 to 0-2 at the half time whistle.

Boherbue confirmed their superiority upon the restart as four points followed in a twelve minute spell. Robert Emmets were eventually rewarded on the scoreboard for their commendable efforts as Daniel Culloty found the target midway through the half. Boherbue ensured the destination of the trophy, as their defence held firm against the best that the Robert Emmets attack could muster while at the other end a point was added before a second goal put them further out of sight. Robert Emmets competed gamely to the final whistle with Daniel Culloty adding a point but Boherbue wrapped up proceedings with one final point.

The Robert Emmets team and scorers…

Daniel Culloty (0-3), Eddie Allen (0-1).

An exhibition of point taking and forward play from Newmarket’s outstanding John Lane enabled Newmarket to earn a hard fought home league victory over Glanmire by 0-16 to 0-11 on Saturday evening. The magnificent corner forward recorded a tally of eight points, seven from play and indeed the free was also of high quality finishing.

A tough struggle developed on a hard surface as ill discipline accounted for the first six points of the evening. T.J. Bodie executed two well taken frees in the third and sixth minutes as John Lane was upended on each occasion. Glanmire punished Newmarket’s indiscretions with four converted frees in as many minutes as they turned over to lead by 0-4 to 0-2 by the twelfth minute.

Both sides matched each other as defences held firm until the first score from play arrived after twenty minutes, when Seanie Francis O’Connor stayed composed to set up T.J. Bodie and he slotted over his third point. Two minutes later the sides were level for a second time following the best move of the half. Barry O’Leary linked well with John Lane who brought T.J. Bodie into the action and he returned the favour for the corner forward to strike his first point of the contest. Glanmire hit the front again thanks to two points in succession and Newmarket had to reorganize their formation as Conor Cronin and T.J. Brosnan had to depart the action through injury.

Newmarket completed the half with John Lane pointing in style as he cut in on goal and the visitors led by 0-6 to 0-5 at the short whistle.

Newmarket resumed in a blaze as John Lane was placed with perfect possession and he laid down a marker for the half on bisecting the posts with another class finish, his third point of the game, to tie the sides again at 0-6 apiece. Two minutes later and Timothy Murphy and David O’Flynn were the instigators of another well worked score, with the latter placing a perfect pass to the dynamic John Lane and despite the shackles of his opponent he still managed to blaze the ball over the bar.

Seanie Francis O’Connor got in on the act with a sublimely taken point and another from the mesmeric John Lane opened up a three point lead for the hosts. He showed his ability from a placed ball as again he was unerring on finding the target from a difficult angle on the left hand side of the goal. A prolific Newmarket spell continued as David O’Flynn and Kevin O’Sullivan combined to find Barry O’Leary and the Newmarket captain chipped in with a trademark well executed score from his foray into the attack, Newmarkets sixth point in succession in a superb ten minute spell.

Glanmire recovered well and two points left them trailing 0-11 to 0-8 midway through the half. Newmarket stemmed the comeback thanks to the endeavour and graft of Michael Kenneally whose tenacity earned a free and T.J. Bodie obliged on converting the resultant free with maximum effect.

Glanmire surged forward and asked questions of the home side as two more points cut the lead to 0-12 to 0-10 with ten minutes remaining. Once again, however, Newmarket answered the challenge and Brian O’Riordan pointed for a much needed score. Glanmire returned once more and a point left the game very finely balanced going into the closing minutes. Newmarket showed the desire required with no little skill as Timothy Murphy placed an exquisite pass into space for Kevin O’Sullivan and his crossfield pass found Seanie Francis O’Connor who supplied the perfect finish. Newmarket pressed to the end and fittingly the prolific John Lane had the final say as two more excellent points brought his personal tally to eight and sealed a well earned third league victory from four for Newmarket.

The Newmarket team and scorers…

John Lane (0-8), T.J. Bodie (0-4), Seanie Francis O’Connor (0-2), Brian O’Riordan (0-1), Barry O’Leary (0-1)

Newmarket’s senior footballers endured their first league defeat in their third outing following a disappointing performance against Eire Og at sun drenched Ovens on Sunday afternoon where the home side earned a clear 1-13 to 1-5 victory.

The home side swept in front within seconds of the throw in but the vast open spaces of the playing surface and some tight defences ensured a fourteen minute scoreless period followed, despite the constructive endeavours of both sides. Newmarket found an equalizer midway through the half thanks to the exploits of the outstanding John Lane who splendidly engineered a position to punch a point after a rampaging solo run. Eire Og hit the front for a second time before once again John Lane tied the sides on pointing despite being unbalanced whist shooting at the posts. Newmarket created several good scoring opportunities but failed to capitalize on clear goal and point chances and suffered as a far more economical Eire Og fired over three points in as many minutes to establish a lead. Newmarket concluded the half with a pointed free through T.J. Bodie which left the hosts with an advantage of 0-5 to 0-3 at the half time whistle.

A similar pattern emerged in the second half as again Newmarket saw several attempts drift either side of the uprights despite the endeavours of amongst others Denys O’Brien, the tireless working Tony O’Keeffe and the on song John Lane. Indeed the only score for nineteen minutes of the second half came nine minutes into the half when Eire Og were awarded a contentious penalty following some last gasp defending from which Newmarket emerged with the ball. The penalty was converted and as game entered the final ten minutes the first point of the half from Eire Og gave them a six point lead. They added another point before Newmarket had a rare moment of joy with seven minutes remaining. T.J. Brosnan surged into attack and together with impressive substitute Daniel Culloty they combined to link up with T.J. Bodie and he bundled the ball to the net from close range.

Eire Og’s response was clinical as three quickfire points regained a commanding seven point lead. T.J. Bodie and John Lane were on target as the teams traded four points but a convincing win for Eire Og was confirmed with one final point.

The Newmarket team and scorers…

T.J. Bodie (1-2), John Lane (0-3).

A return of one goal and four points in the final ten minutes enabled Kanturk to progress into the semi finals of the Duhallow under 21 football championship by 1-12 to 0-9, after an otherwise tight and evenly contested encounter against Robert Emmets at Millstreet on Friday night.

Robert Emmets had the advantage of a significant breeze in the first half and the combined Newmarket/Lismire side began positively. Cathal Noonan and Daniel Culloty linked up with Eddie Allen and he pointed superbly in the second minute. Daniel Culloty doubled the lead a minute later on converting a free but Kanturk responded with their first point of the evening instantly. A second Kanturk point levelled the sides for the first time of an open, free flowing, and entertaining contest.

Daniel Culloty pointed clinically to edge Robert Emmets in front again after a chance was created thanks to the endeavours of Jonathan Flaherty and Barry O’Connor. Gavin Forde added another memorable point to double the lead but Kanturk pointed twice to once again gain parity with six first half minutes remaining. Daniel Culloty pointed his second free as the sides exchanged points before Robert Emmets went into the interval following the conclusion of a fine half’s football with a slender advantage as Gavin Forde pointed to gain a 0-6 to 0-5 lead.

The second half developed into a scrappier, stop-start affair with the highly committed sides leaving nothing in their quest for success. Robert Emmets weathered the Kanturk onslaught as the wind advantage was now well in their opponents favour and Cathal Noonan boosted Robert Emmets challenge with a point ten minutes into the second half. Kanturk pointed twice and midway through the half, the sides remained deadlocked for a fourth time at 0-7 apiece. Kanturk hit the front for the first time but Robert Emmets were again on level terms with Brian O’Callaghan clipping over a point with ten minutes remaining. Kanturk found an extra gear and struck over three points in four minutes to gain the biggest lead of the night up to that point. With three minutes remaining Kanturk sealed the issue on converting a penalty but a battling, youthful Robert Emmets side competed to the end as a final Kanturk point was answered in similar fashion by the impressive Donal Hannon.

The Newmarket team and scorers…

Daniel Culloty (0-3), Gavin Forde (0-2), Donal Hannon (0-1), Cathal Noonan (0-1), Eddie Allen (0-1), Brian O’Callaghan (0-1).

Boherbue travelled to Newmarket and claimed the points on offer in round 3 of the Ducon Cup on winning by 1-14 to 1-7.

Nicky Flanagan gave Newmarket the lead with the first score of the contest before Boherbue responded with two points. Kevin O’Sullivan tied the scores for a second time but Boherbue had the next two points to establish an advantage. Newmarket replied as John Cronin fired home a goal but Boherbue’s fifth point of the half gained parity for a third time. The visitors edged in front before half time to leave the score at 0-6 to 1-2.

Boherbue were first to point after the restart but a Colin Stack point kept Newmarket very much in the hunt. The sides again traded points with Nicky Flanagan on target for the home side before Boherbue reeled off three points in succession to take a four point advantage. Newmarket replied in fine fashion with a similar return of three points in succession through Nicky Flanagan and a double from Daniel Culloty to leave the score reading 0-11 to 1-7. Boherbue, however, took a grip on the contest when they added a point and crucially found the net to put five points between the sides. Boherbue completed their victory with another two points to maintain a position at the top of the table.

The Newmarket team and scorers…

John Cronin (1-0), Daniel Culloty (0-2), Nicky Flanagan (0-1), Colin Stack (0-1), Kevin O’Sullivan (0-1)

Newmarket’s minor football team kept their league record intact with a home victory over Buttevant by 1-12 to 1-2 at Newmarket on Monday afternoon.

Gavin Forde edged the home side in front with a well taken point in the fifth minute. Both Barry O’Connor and Daniel Culloty converted frees before Buttevant pointed after seventeen minutes. Newmarket were guilty of over elaboration and sloppy defending in the nineteenth minute and the visitors took full advantage to slam home a goal to overturn the scoreboard in their favour. Newmarket recovered from this setback and some excellent link up play led to Michael Cottrell supplying the finish to tie the sides 0-4 to 1-1 after twenty minutes play.

Newmarket regained the initiative and were driven on by the outstanding displays of Paudie Allen and Donal Hannon who were prominent throughout. Danny O’Connell did well to snap over a point in a crowded goalmouth before Daniel Culloty was on target from a free. Newmarket survived a few nervy moments in defence before a second Buttevant point left Newmarket with a lead of 0-6 to 1-2 at the interval.

At times both sides play was littered with errors and wild efforts on goal with Michael Cottrell supplying a moment of quality on pointing six minutes into the half. Jonathan Flaherty surged forward from midfield to get on the scoresheet but for a spell Newmarket squandered several scoring opportunities before Paudie Allen capped a superb display with an equally memorably executed point from a difficult angle. Barry O’Connor caused problems in attack and his influence grew as the game progressed. He added his second point to stretch to lead to five points with ten minutes remaining. Newmarket took a firm stranglehold two minutes later thanks in the main to the brilliance of Donal Hannon. He fielded superbly from a Newmarket kickout and set off on a blistering solo run through the field before off loading to the well placed Daniel Culloty who supplied a wonderful finish to the corner of the net.

Newmarket completed their victory by adding another brace of points with Barry O’Connor supplying the finishing touches on both occasions.

The Newmarket team and scorers…

Daniel Culloty (1-2), Barry O’Connor (0-4), Michael Cottrell (0-2), Paudie Allen (0-1), Jonathan Flaherty (0-1), Gavin Forde (0-1), Danny O’Connell (0-1)

Newmarket made it two wins from two following a fine victory over Castletownbere by 4-14 to 0-10 in their first home league game as a senior club in splendid sunshine on Sunday afternoon.

A quite exhilarating display of football in the first half paved the way for the success, with a glittering array of points accounting for a tally of 1-11 without a single wide being recorded.

The visitors opened the scoring inside the first minute but Newmarket responded in fine fashion. T.J. Bodie slotted over an equalizer from a free before Barry O’Leary and Kevin O’Sullivan found the target. T.J. Bodie added Newmarket’s fourth point in the tenth minute but Castletownbere added the next two points to leave the score reading 0-4 to 0-3 after twelve action packed minutes of play.

Newmarket’s fast flowing football was devastating and scores stemmed from deep within the home defence. Michael Kenneally finished off a superb move when pointing after a build up involving Conor Cronin, Steven Stokes, Tony O’Keeffe and John Lane. A minute later it got even better for Newmarket with yet another well worked move. Goalkeeper David Quinlan gathered possession and moments later Tony O’Keeffe and John Lane carved open an opportunity for Nicky Flanagan who slotted the ball to the net past the advancing goalkeeper.

Newmarket really turned on the style and three superbly taken points from distance were added through Barry O’Leary, Tony O’Keeffe and Kevin O’Sullivan. Castletownbere had their fourth point of the half but Newmarket kept up the momentum with T.J. Bodie pointing after being set up by John Lane who was instrumental in numerous scores throughout. The sides exchanged points as Nicky Flanagan converted a free before Tony O’Keeffe concluded the scoring to leave Newmarket with a lead of 1-11 to 0-5 at the turnover.

Castletownbere resumed the brighter side and after two early points, Newmarket goalkeeper David Quinlan came to the rescue with a point blank save and the defence were grateful to emerge from the resulting goalmouth scramble unscathed. Newmarket had to wait twelve minutes to register a second half score and a goal resulted as T.J. Bodie’s free from distance found its way to the net. Nicky Flanagan and T.J. Bodie increased the advantage to twelve points before Castletownbere added their next point. With five minutes remaining, T.J. Bodie found the net for a second time with Castletownbere pointing in their next meaningful attack. There was still time for a fourth Newmarket goal and once again John Lane superbly released Tony O’Keeffe who finished emphatically to the roof of the net with an unstoppable shot. Two points were shared before the conclusion with Daniel Culloty finishing proceedings with a neatly taken point.

The Newmarket team and scorers…

T.J. Bodie (2-4), Tony O’Keeffe (1-2), Nicky Flanagan (1-2), Kevin O’Sullivan (0-2), Barry O’Leary (0-2), Michael Kenneally (0-1), Daniel Culloty (0-1)

A quite stunning display from beginning to end enabled Newmarket’s minor footballers to record their fourth successive victory and maintain their perfect return from four league outings after a staggering win over Blackwater Rovers at Killavullen on Sunday morning.

Newmarket laid down a marker from the outset with Daniel Culloty pointing in the third minute. A minute later Barry O’Connor placed Gavin Forde with a pass and he made no mistake in finding the net for the first goal of the contest. Newmarket were in buoyant form with Gavin Forde and Alan Ryan stretching the advantage to six points after eight minutes. A second goal followed moments later, thanks to the industry of Con McAuliffe and Michael Cottrell who once again found Gavin Forde and his shot found the roof of the net in emphatic fashion. Gavin Forde and Michael Cottrell added points before Blackwater Rovers pointed in the eighteenth minute. A relentless Newmarket onslaught continued with Danny O’Connell pointing before Peter Lynch side stepped his way through the defence for a well taken solo goal. The prolific duo of Gavin Forde and Daniel Culloty twice, tacked over further points as Newmarket reached the interval with a tally of 3-9 before Blackwater Rovers pointed the final score of the half.

A well worked move from the second half throw in ended with Michael Cottrell supplying a textbook point. Gavin Forde and Michael Cottrell again found their range and the target before Alan Ryan fielded a kickout and burst his way through several opponents to finish superbly to the net. Donnacha Drumm and Daniel Culloty pointed before Michael Cottrell was alert to a dropping goal bound free to supply the finishing touch to the net. Daniel Culloty pointed stylishly before he added a free and Donal Hannon found the target by similar means. Daniel Culloty added his seventh point of the hour before Con McAuliffe and Michael Cottrell completed a resounding display with another brace of points.

The Newmarket team and scorers…

Gavin Forde (2-4), Daniel Culloty (0-7), Michael Cottrell (1-4), Alan Ryan (1-1), Peter Lynch (1-0), Con McAuliffe (0-1), Donal Hannon (0-1), Danny O’Connell (0-1), Donnacha Drumm (0-1)
