In mighty weather conditions Freemount hit the first point of the game after two minutes. Seanie Francis O’Connor struck back for the home side with a free a minute later. Freemount took control of the game after this and proceeded to hit over another five points without reply to leave Newmarket down six points to one at the interval. Newmarket improved in the second half with Seanie Francis putting over another point from a free two minutes into the second half. Freemount struck back with a point of their own on 37 minutes.

Newmarket took control for the next few minutes with fine points to Barry O’ Leary from distance and a sideline ball from Kevin O’ Sullivan. Freemount got the next score which turned out to be the vital one in the end with a goal on 53 minutes to lead 1-7 to 0-6. Newmarket fought bravely with two more Seanie Francis points and another Barry O’ Leary point from distance. The game ended on a score line of 1-7 to 0-8 in Freemount’s favour.

Newmarket were unlucky not to get something out of this game again but they battled bravely and showed some good fighting spirit.

They lost on a score line of 0-13 0-12. Newmarket got off to a very bad start and found themselves down by 7 points to nil after 19 minutes with Millstreet much quicker out of the blocks. Kevin O’ Sullivan got Newmarket’s first point from a free which in turn started a Newmarket revival. Anthony Crowley struck a 24th minute point which was followed in quick succession with points from Shane Murphy, John Lane from a placed ball and a fine Barry O’ Leary point which left the home side leading by 7 points to 4 at the break.

Newmarket gained the upper hand in the game after half time when Kevin O Sullivan struck another point on 38 minutes. Substitute Seanie Francis O’ Conner scored the next three points, all from frees in the space of six minutes. John Lane nailed a point on 52 minutes to put Newmarket ahead for the first time in the match. Millstreet got the next score with 7 minutes left after being kept scoreless for a 40 minute period. They scored another two points in as many minutes to take a 2 point lead. Newmarket weren’t finished yet with Seanie Francis again scoring with 2 minutes to go and he got another point from a free with a minute to go to put Newmarket back on level terms with Millstreet. The comeback was faltered however when Millstreet were awarded a penalty which they duly put over the bar to win on a score line of o-13 to 0-12. It was a very spirited Newmarket and in truth they did not deserve to lose this match.

Newmarket’s impressive centre forward Ian Flanagan hit two early points to give his side a good start after five minutes. Banteer reduced the arrears but Ian Flanagan kept Newmarket in front with a brace of points to leave Newmarket in front at the end of the opening quarter by 0-4 to 0-3.

At this stage Banteer assumed control and their slick forwards scored two goals in quick succession to tilt the contest firmly in their favour. They maintained their dominance and by the end of the end reached a total of 3-8.

Ian Flanagan continued to find the range from various angles as Newmarket struggled to cope with an impressive Banteer attack. Darren O’Keeffe struck a point from distance and Ian Flanagan capped off a fine display with a good individual goal. Newmarket were also well served by goalkeeper Paul Verling, Brendan Stack, Michael O’Leary and Denis McCarthy.

Newmarket had their first outing in this years junior hurling league when they travelled to Tullylease on Sunday, where the home side emerged victorious by 3-13 to 2-9 in greasy, wet conditions.

Tullylease were much sharper at the outset and had four points on the board after eleven minutes. Newmarket settled and John Lane got them on the scoreboard from a free. Denys O’Brien soloed in on goal before pointing and some fine teamwork was rewarded with Barry O’Leary striking from long range which left the score 0-4 to 0-3 after twenty minutes. Tullylease were awarded a free two minutes later and despite the Newmarket goal being well guarded they found the net from the resultant free. Kevin O’Sullivan responded for Newmarket with a point from distance. Newmarket created a number of attacking opportunities led by the inspiring Tony O’Keeffe at half back, but the final score of the half went to Tullylease and they turned over in front by 1-5 to 0-4.

John Lane pointed four minutes after the restart for Newmarket before the sides went on to exchange a brace of points, Denys O’Brien landing a super effort from distance by the sideline which left a solitary goal between the sides.

At the end of the quarter, Tullylease gradually added to their lead and as a result scored the games next four points. As the game entered the final ten minutes, Newmarket’s challenge was reignited. Kieran Hayes gathered possession and bore down on goal before offloading to Shane Murphy and he struck first time with an unstoppable shot to the top corner of the Tullylease net to reduce the arrears, 1-10 to 1-6. However, Newmarket’s respite was brief, as Tullylease quickly added two goals and also had two points in the next few minutes. John Lane then added a Newmarket free as the sides exchanged points. To their credit, Newmarket maintained their challenge to the end. Michael Kenneally raced in on goal and found the net from twenty yards before John Lane and Shane Murphy also added points before Newmarket’s first hurling outing of the year came to a conclusion.

The Newmarket team was…

A sensationally converted Kanturk sideline kick, which was the final piece of action in an enthralling contest, ensured Newmarket and Kanturk must meet again in the Duhallow under 21 football final. A memorable final ended 1-13 to 2-10 under the floodlit Knocknagree venue on Friday evening.

Kanturk were much the hungrier side in the first half and this was evident from the very start when they scored three points in rapid time. Newmarket got off the mark when John Lane converted a fifth minute free with John Ryan reducing the deficit by similar means in the tenth minute. A determined Kanturk were next to score before a John Lane point left Newmarket trailing by 0-4 to 0-3 at the end of the first quarter. Kanturk maintained their superiority with two more points in quick succession before Newmarket eventually got to grips with their opponents and gradually forced themselves into the contest. Kanturk, however were resolute in defence and Newmarket’s only reward was when Ian Flanagan did extremely well before slotting over a point. This proved to be the final score of the half and Kanturk went in at half time in front by 0-6 to 0-4.

A converted free within two minutes of a terrific second half increased Kanturk’s advantage before a different Newmarket side emerged. John Lane pointed for the defending champions and Nicky Flanagan also found the target. Ten minutes into the half a long delivery from Kevin O’Sullivan was fielded superbly by Nicky Flanagan twenty yards from goal and he raced towards the Kanturk goal before unleashing a wonderful shot to the corner of the net. This inspiring goal gave Newmarket the lead for the first time in the contest and they went on to produce some magnificent football in the next ten minutes. Brian O’Riordan surged forward and dissected the posts from long range with Kevin O’Sullivan landing a similarly fine effort from range. John Lane then added a free as Newmarket excelled all over the field. Kevin O’Sullivan again produced another massive point before Kanturk added their first score for eighteen minutes.

With little over ten minutes remaining, Robert Stack struck yet another glorious long range point and Newmarket had a substantial lead of 1-11 to 0-8. However, a resolute Kanturk side turned the game completely on its head when they struck for two quickfire goals in as many minutes to regain the initiative. A thrilling contest ebbed and flowed in the remaining minutes as both sides gave everything they had to clinch the title. John Lane edged Newmarket in front again but within a minute Kanturk wiped out the lead in their next attack. The game entered injury time and a draw seemed likely, however Nicky Flanagan somehow found the target with a sublime kick from the narrowest of angles, practically on the Kanturk endline and Newmarket took the lead again. The final piece of drama ensued and fittingly another outstanding score under intense pressure from a Kanturk sideline kick brought an end to a dramatic contest.

The Newmarket team was…

Glen Rovers Oust Newmarket Minor Hurlers

By the narrow margin of two points, a strong Glen Rovers team put Newmarket out of the Minor Hurling County Final at Mallow on Sunday before an attendance that was remarkably small for a semi-final game.

The All-Ireland match at Croke Park, as well as the broadcast was of course the reason for the poor attendance but, nevertheless a great following from both the Glen and Newmarket camps was expected.

The game was a close, keenly-contested struggle and if the hurling of the city boys was a little more finished and co-ordinated than that of Newmarket, the dash and determination of the latter provided an adequate counter balance.

Play opened with the exercise of Glen pressure on the Newmarket goal, but McCarthy and Scully were stout in defence and the honour of the first score fell to Newmarket when “Baxie” O’Sullivan sent over a point after the game had been five minutes in progress.

After the puck-out the Glen returned to the attack but the Newmarket defence held and though O’Sullivan in goal was sorely tried, the play went out to midfield and it was the turn of the Blackpool backs to take the brunt. Mulcahy and lynch on the 40 yards line tussled with Cronin and Quane the fast Newmarket men. Mick Madden on the left wing for Newmarket saw his opportunity and took it when Callaghan led a sortie into Glen territory and in the Tenth minute of play Newmarket were 1 goal and a point ahead.

A minute later things looked very dangerous for Newmarket as forwards and backs mixed it right in front of the goalmouth. Scully was a tower of strength for Newmarket however and must be credited with some splendid saves. When the pressure on their goal had been temporarily lifted Newmarket took play down field with a strong wide behind them but an attempt to score went wide.

After the puck-out, Glen returned to the attack and sustained the pressure until Sean O’Sullivan got home a goal.

From this stage forward the Glen appeared to waken to the fact that Newmarket would prove a hard team to beat and their initial score was followed by a period of close keen hurling with the Glen doing the attacking and Scully, Sullivan and McAuliffe standing up to repeated assaults. With an overhead the Glen forwards again goaled and Deasy some minutes later added a point. Encouraged by their lead, the Glen attempted to dominate the play but Newmarket fought back and succeeded on a number of occasions in threatening the city goal.

After a few erratic shots, Chifford on the right wing for the Glen succeeded in sending over a second point with a beautiful shot from the 70 yards line.

Newmarket tried hard to regain the lead during the last minutes of the first half, imbued, no doubt with anxiety to make the most of the very strong wind, but the half-time score found the Glen leading with 2-2 to Newmarket’s 1-1.

GLEN MAKE CHANGES

The city boys made some slight positional changes in the second half which had no sooner opened than Clifford notched up a point for Glen, Sullivan put the city team further ahead with a goal and the Newmarket sent over a point. The Glen added another point and a second later with a grand effort from nearly 40 yards. Mick Madden narrowed the gap with a goal for Newmarket. From a free Callaghan gave Newmarket a point. In a matter of seconds Deasy retaliated for the Glen with a goal and when the ball came back into play Clifford had a point for the city. For fully five minutes the Newmarket goal withstood a terrific assault and when pressure was at last relieved, Callaghan went off at the at the nose of a Newmarket drive to enable Madden to mark up a point. Again the glen attacked but Scully brought the play out field and when Quane sent down, Collins goaled for Newmarket. The Glen returned to the offensive but failed to score and the game ended on a high fast note, with the register standing at The Glen 4-4 Newmarket 3-5.

Extract from A History of Newmarket GAA:

“The Newmarket team that year was the best that ever represented the Division, when you consider that the Glen Rovers team contained eight of the Cork panel who won the All Ireland in September.”

Millstreet scored the first two points of the contest before Kevin O’Sullivan surged forward from his centre half back position to kick Newmarket’s first score. The impressive Sean Doody also got into an attacking position to kick a fine equalizing point at the end of the first quarter. Nicky Flanagan edged Newmarket in front for the first time but Millstreet restored parity two minutes later. Brian Daly kicked a fine long range point and Maurice Feehan finished off an impressive passage of play with another point to give Newmarket the slight edge. The home side finished the half in the ascendancy and three unanswered points gave them a slender advantage at half time by 0-6 to 0-5.

Nicky Flanagan pointed in the opening passage of play in the second half to leave the sides tied for a fourth time. Newmarket hit the front again from the growing influence of Shane Anthony Murphy but the sides were level within a minute, with Millstreet next to find the target.

Newmarket began to enjoy a period of dominance at this stage of the game and some fine football was rewarded with a few excellent scores which duly came through the accuracy of Shane Anthony Murphy twice, Maurice Feehan, Nicky Flanagan and a memorable Brian Daly effort. This gave Newmarket a five point advantage 0-12 to 0-7 as the game entered the final quarter. Millstreet maintained their challenge and began the revival with two quick fire points with six minutes left to play. Three minutes later Millstreet struck for the only goal of the game and yet again tie the contest. Newmarket struck back with Shane Anthony Murphy slotting over a free with less than two minutes to play. It was the home side who duly got the final score of the contest with a point and both sides ended with a share of the spoils.

Newmarket got off to a terrific start that yielded two goals in the first six minutes. Darren O’Keeffe showed great composure when finishing to the net from close range after four minutes and just two minutes later a neat finish from T.J. Brosnan doubled Newmarket’s lead. Amazingly, the next score of the contest was also a goal. In the tenth minute Boherbue were awarded a penalty which was duly dispatched to the net. Newmarket endeavoured to create numerous good scoring opportunities but were guilty of missing a succession of chances. Darren O’Keeffe was the only player who managed to find the target during this period. At the back Brendan Stack impressed with Alan Forde also to the fore while goalkeeper David Quinlan produced one particularly spectacular save to keep his goal intact. Boherbue added a point to their total which left the half time score 2-1 to 1-1 in Newmarket’s favour.

Boherbue added two points in the first ten minutes of the second half before Darren O’Keeffe helped Newmarket back into a two point advantage. As the game entered the final quarter the issue was finely balanced. T.J. Brosnan kicked a superb long distance point but at this stage Boherbue seized the initiative and finished very strongly. A second goal gave them the lead for the first time with less than ten minutes to play. They sealed the issue with a third goal right at the end to confirm a six point winning margin.

Defending champions Newmarket qualified for a third successive Duhallow under 21 football final when they defeated Dromtariffe on Sunday evening at the latter’s venue by 1-11 to 1-7.

Playing against a cool breeze, Newmarket flew out of the traps. Bart Daly surged forward to kick a fine opening point in the fourth minute. The very lively John Lane then punched a point and John Ryan converted a free after seven minutes. Dromtariffe then settled into the game and were rewarded with two points by the end of the opening quarter. Newmarket managed to hold on to their slender lead and Ian Flanagan was on hand to score a badly needed point for Newmarket after twenty minutes. This propelled Newmarket back into form and they finished the half strongly and increased their lead by three further points, with John Ryan adding two further pointed frees, either side of another John Lane point. This gave Newmarket a lead of 0-7 to 0-2 at the turnover.

Dromtariffe resumed with a point within a minute of the restart but Kevin O’Sullivan pointed for Newmarket three minutes later. Dromtariffe pointed next, but yet again Newmarket responded with a point, this time through Ian Flanagan. The decisive score of the game came ten minutes into the half. Kevin O’Sullivan slipped a pass to Bart Daly who played a wonderful cross field pass into the hands of Nicky Flanagan twenty yards from goal, Nicky still had plenty to do but he sidestepped the Dromtariffe defence and finished brilliantly to the corner of the net with an unstoppable shot. An injured John Lane’s last piece of action was to kick a point from a free and Newmarket led by 1-10 to 0-4 at the three quarter stage. Newmarket’s performance was very patchy for the remainder of the game.

A dogged Dromtariffe side kept going and added the next two points before Kevin O’Sullivan scored what proved to be Newmarket’s final score of the game with ten minutes still to play. Dromtariffe further reduced the deficit with a point and they struck for a goal in the final stages of the game. This proved to be the final score of the game and Newmarket claimed a four point victory. They now progress to meet Kanturk in the final.

The hosts began brightly and took a fifth minute lead through the very impressive Shane Anthony Murphy. John Ryan added a point from a free two minutes later. The visitors were next to score in the tenth minute. Newmarket struggled badly in front of goal for the remainder of the half, despite carving out a number of scoring opportunities, they were guilty of missing a succession of chances. Rockchapel tied the contest with a point in the nineteenth minute and took the lead for the first time two minutes later. Newmarket got a reprieve in the twenty fourth minute when Michael Kenneally sent Shane Anthony Murphy through and he duly finished to the net in confident fashion. Rochchapel responded and finished the half well with two points enabling the sides to turn over level at the halfway point at 1-2 to 0-5.

Rockchapel gained the initiative upon the restart and built up a three point advantage, having added three points in nine minutes. Nicky Flanagan added a much needed score for Newmarket, but Rockchapel added a further two points by the end of the third quarter. Once more, Shane Anthony Murphy came to Newmarket’s aid with a fine point from play. Rockchapel maintained their dominance and a lively forward division added another brace of points. Shane Anthony Murphy reduced the deficit to four points as the game entered the final stages, but Rockchapel confirmed their victory with a late goal to round off a good display. Shane Anthony Murphy did score the final point of the game but it proved mere consolation for a Newmarket side that was defeated by 1-12 to 1-6.

The visitors got off to the perfect start with a goal within the first minute with Bryan O’Connell pointing next for Newmarket. A strong Naomh Aban side went on to score a further goal and three points in the opening ten minutes. Darren O’Keeffe kicked an excellent point for Newmarket which left the score 2-3 to 0-2 after twelve minutes. Naomh Aban continued to add a number of fine points as they tacked on to their tally, with Bryan O’Connell keeping Newmarket in touch with a brace of points which left the score 2-7 to 0-4 at the interval.

Similarly to the first half, Naomh Aban blitzed Newmarket early in the second period and scored a goal and three more points. Newmarket pointed next through Bryan O’Connell and at the end of the third quarter T.J. Brosnan finished to the net from close range for a Newmarket goal. Naomh Aban added three points in the final quarter but Newmarket replied with scores from Bryan O’Connell and Ian Flanagan. The home side completed the scoring when Luke McCarthy goaled in the final moments of the contest.

Newmarket’s intermediate footballers recorded a fine victory when they defeated near neighbours Kiskeam by 1-13 to 1-10 in the first round of the Evening Echo Premier Intermediate Football Championship played before a large attendance on a fine Spring day in Kanturk last Sunday.

Newmarket’s young side got off to the best possible start with John Lane kicking a superb point within the opening minute. Kiskeam gained parity from their first attack a minute later from a converted free. Newmarket, playing with the aid of a strong breeze, took the initiative in the third minute. Denys O’Brien began a move from midfield and Kevin O’Sullivan and John Lane were involved before Denys O’Brien surged forward and finished to the net with style from ten yards. John Ryan then converted a long range free. Kiskeam responded with two points to reduce the deficit, 1-2 to 0-3, at the end of the first quarter.

Newmarket were impressive when they swept forward and Bart Daly ended another slick move with an excellent point from distance. Kiskeam were next to score and a pivotal moment in the game came in the twenty first minute, when Kiskeam were awarded what can only be described as a very dubious penalty. Undeterred, debutant Newmarket goalkeeper Niall O’Connor produced a wonderful save from the resulting kick and a buoyed Newmarket surged forward with team captain David O’Flynn on hand to slot over another fine point and leave Newmarket in front by 1-4 to 0-4. Newmarket took control of this phase of the game and a free flowing forward line answered with points through John Lane, David O’Flynn and Bart Daly. Kiskeam completed the scoring in the first half with a point but Newmarket turned over in front by 1-7 to 0-5.

Kiskeam had a point within the first minute of the restart as the expected Kiskeam comeback materialised. Another debutant John Ryan coolly converted a free to restore Newmarket’s advantage. Two frees brought Kiskeam to within a goal at the end of the third quarter. John Lane then scored his third point of the game but within a minute the game took a significant twist when Kiskeam made the most of some hesitant Newmarket defending and pounced to score a goal and leave just the minimum between the sides, 1-9 to 1-8 with little over ten minutes remaining.

Newmarket maintained their composure and enjoyed numerical advantage for the rest of the game. John Ryan neatly pointed to edge Newmarket further in front and a minute later his quick thinking from a free set up an unmarked Denys O’Brien to punch another point. The game entered injury time but still had a number of minutes remaining with Kiskeam next to score. Newmarket played cleverly when in possession and a fine interception from Kevin O’Sullivan set up Tony O’Keeffe and he pointed without hesitancy from twenty yards out. Kiskeam surged forward to salvage a result and again narrowed the margin to two points but a determined Newmarket outfit were not to be denied and fittingly experienced midfielder Denys O’Brien, who epitomised the team spirit, once more got forward to score the final point of the contest and leave Newmarket victors by 1-13 to 1-10.

It was a fine victory for a youthful, resourceful Newmarket side that contained six players who made their debut at this level of championship football and all performed admirably together with the rest of the team, they produced a fine all round team display as they maintained a lead from the third minute of the game It was Newmarket’s first championship victory for three years and they can now look forward to the third round in June.

Newmarket’s intermediate footballers completed their preparations for next Sunday’s championship encounter with Kiskeam, by suffering their first league defeat, away to Clyda Rovers at Mourne Abbey last Sunday by 0-10 to 0-8, after a fine late comeback.

Despite the inclement weather conditions the game was played on a superb pitch. The home side began strongly and took an early two point lead after five minutes. Newmarket missed a number of scoring opportunities before an impressive passage of play ended with midfielder Timothy Murphy surging forward to kick a seventh minute point. The home side edged further in front with a third point in the opening quarter. Playing with the aid of the breeze Clyda made their advantage pay by scoring a further three points in the final ten minutes of the half to turnover in front by 0-6 to 0-1.

Clyda resumed with a point within two minutes of the restart before Bart Daly slotted over a free for Newmarket. Clyda maintained their advantage with the next score but an improving Newmarket side replied through Timothy Murphy.

At the end of the third quarter the home side pointed to lead by 0-9 to 0-3 and seemingly take control of the contest. Newmarket despite industrious effort, found it difficult to convert chances throughout, until the final quarter. Substitute T.J. Bodie kicked a superb score with Nicky Flanagan also on target from a free. Newmarket finished very strongly in every sector, with the influential Nicky Flanagan on the mark again to leave three points between the sides with just over five minutes remaining. Bart Daly pointed next and then John Ryan kicked a super score to leave just a single point between the sides, with the game entering the final couple of minutes. Newmarket were poised to salvage a result but the home side sealed the issue with the final point of the game and win an interesting contest.

The game was played in heavy conditions and a number of drizzly showers did not help proceedings. Newmarket played with the aid of a strong breeze in the first half but had to wait until the twelvth minute to get on the scoreboard with the in form Tony O’Keeffe finding the target. Grenagh tied the scores within two minutes and took control adding four points in quick succession. John Lane reduced the deficit but Grenagh kept up the momentum by scoring two further points. With less than five minutes remaining in the half, Newmarket sprung into action. They scored four points through Tony O’Keeffe, Barry O’Leary, Kevin O’Sullivan and John Lane to finish the half just one point in arrears, 0-7 to 0-6.
Within a minute of the restart the visitors increased their lead but Bart Daly pointed a free for Newmarket two minutes later. A competitive contest saw a number of tight exchanges as defences began to hold the respective set of forwards at bay. Grenagh received a major boost when they scored a fine goal at the end of the third quarter to open a four point gap. To their credit despite playing against the elements, Newmarket rose to the challenge. Inspired from defence by Barry O’Leary they set about reducing the deficit. John Lane pointed a free as the game entered the closing ten minutes. He then added two more frees which left a solitary point between the sides. With five minutes remaining, Pa O’Brien kicked a ball towards the Grenagh goal and Tony O’Keeffe was on hand to fist the ball over the crossbar and tie the scores. Neither side could find a match winning score in the remaining minutes but a draw was a fair result and Newmarket now have five points after three league outings.

Newmarket’s intermediate footballers maintained their winning start to Division 3 of the league when they recorded a fine victory away to Nemo Rangers on Sunday by 1-11 to 0-9.

The home side began well and opened the scoring with a point after five minutes. Newmarket in their first real attack were awarded a free in the seventh minute. John Lane took the free and his kick dropped dangerously on the edge of the square with Nicky Flanagan adding a deft touch that ended in the back of the Nemo net. The home side converted a free after twelve minutes before Newmarket captain, David O’Flynn ended a fine move by pointing in the next passage of play. Newmarket increased their lead through the impressive John Lane and yet again David O’Flynn led the way with another point. Nemo Rangers reduced the deficit by scoring two points but T.J. Bodie added a brace of points to restore a four point advantage for an impressive Newmarket side. Nemo Rangers pointed next but Newmarket full forward Tony O’Keeffe was rewarded for his hard endeavour with the final score of the half which left Newmarket ahead by 1-6 to 0-5 at the turnover.

Newmarket increased their advantage after the restart when the in form John Lane was on hand to convert two frees within five minutes after he had been upended on both occasions. Nemo had their first score of the half after eleven minutes as Newmarket’s defence impressed in front of goalkeeper Niall O’Connor who produced one super save during this period, in a fine individual performance. Denys O’Brien took control at midfield and he landed a super long range point at the end of the third quarter to leave Newmarket in front by 1-9 to 0-6. Nemo Rangers tried hard to turn the game around and did get the next two scores but a determined Newmarket side responded and had points through Tony O’Keeffe and John Lane. It was the home side who completed the scoring but it was an impressive Newmarket side who collected their second victory in two league outings.
