Newmarket began their 2018 Duhallow JAHL with a 3-12 to 2-13 win over Millstreet. The game was played March 26th in Newmarket.
Newmarket began the game brightly with Donal Hannon splitting the posts twice in the opening minute, however Millstreet quickly got up to the pace of the game and the teams exchanged scores. With 12 minutes on the clock, a hard working Newmarket team got the ball to Barry O’Connor, who took on his marker and rattled the Milstreet net. The scoreboard now showed 1-04 to 0-04. On 17 minutes Hannon got Newmarket’s final score of the half, as Millstreet took over, hitting 7 points without reply. During this period Newmarket had some goal chances, but credit to the Millstreet keeper, who made some great saves to keep the score 1-11 to 1-05 in favour of the away side, at half time.
Millstreet came out with the same intensity and immediately split the posts. The team exchanged scores before the ball broke around the Millstreet square and Hannon flicked the ball into the Millstreet net. Stokes quickly added a point, followed by three frees from Hannon, which left the home side leading on a score line of 2-11 to 1-13, after 55 minutes. With 57 minutes on the clock, Newmarket hit the Millstreet net again through Ryan O’Keeffe, however Millstreet never let their heads drop and immediately struck another goal from a 21 yard free. This proved to be the last puck of the game and the final score read, Newmarket 3-12, Millstreet 2-13.
