Newmarket were crowned Duhallow Junior B champions last Sunday evening in Castlemagner after a hard fought win over St Johns.
Newmarket started brightly with Mike Kenneally opening the scoring inside the first minute with a fine long range point. A minute later John Lane registered his first point of the game and this was quickly followed with another point from Shane “Congo” Murphy. St Johns registered their first point of the game in the 4th minute in what was blistering opening five minutes. Shane Murphy was on target from a placed ball in the 6th minute for Newmarket. However disaster struck for Newmarket in the 8th and 9th minute as St Johns struck for two goals. The goals were almost identical as St Johns ran straight through the Newmarket defence on each occasion to raise green flags. Newmarket didn’t panic and managed to score the next five points without reply. John Lane and Shane Murphy raised white flags in the 12th & 20th minute, Nicky Barrett scored two quick fire points in the 21st and 22nd minute and Eddie Allen recorded a point in the 27th minute. The scoreline at half time read Newmarket 0-9 St Johns 2-1.
The second half was a much tenser battle with both teams sensing victory. St Johns opened the second half in the 31st minute with a pointed free. Shane Murphy who has imperious from placed balls all day raised white flags in the 39th, 43rd and 52nd minute. These frees turned out to be Newmarket’s only scores in the second half but in turned out to be enough as St Johns could only muster two points of their own in the final stages. The final scoreline read Newmarket 0-12 St Johns 2-04.
