Newmarket Junior Hurlers began there Duhallow Junior Hurling Championship crusade with a win over neighbours Kanturk. Newmarket had too much class for Kanturk’s second string outfit in what turned out to be a tough physical battle.
Both teams traded points in the opening quarter with Donal Hannon and Barry O’Connor on target. Further scores from Conor O’Keeffe and O’Connor left Newmarket leading by two points after 15 minutes. In the 16th minute Kanturk registered a goal after a long delivery was scrambled around the small rectangle and was eventually finished to the net. The first half was a ding-dong battle with with Jack Guiney, Conor O’Keeffe and Hannon all responded to Kanturk scores. Newmarket entered the interval on top through a pair of points from Jack Guiney and Donal Hannon . The half time score line read Newmarket 0-10 Kanturk 1-05.
Again both teams traded scores after half time with Donal Hannon on target for Newmarket from three placed balls. Newmarket began to pull away from Kanturk in the 42nd minute with three unanswered points from Barry O’Connor, Shane Murphy and Donal Hannon to lead 0-16 to 1-8. Points in the closing stages from Hannon, Jack Guiney, Barry O’Connor and Niall Rohan ensured Newmarket finished comfortable winners on a score line of 0-22 to 1-09
