Newmarket advanced to semi final of Duhallow Cup

Newmarket advanced to the semi final of the Duhallow Cup after recording a second successive emphatic victory in the competition over Dromtariffe by 5-17 to 2-3 at Boherbue on Saturday evening.

Newmarket began brightly with John Ryan scoring a brace of points by the fifth minute and T.J. Bodie added a third, a minute later. Dromtariffe however, wiped out this advantage as they struck for an equalizing goal in their next foray into the Newmarket half. This failed to deter a free flowing Newmarket side and the impressive John Lane added two points in as many minutes.

By the tenth minute, Newmarket enjoyed a clear lead once Tony O’Keeffe finished to the net for his first goal of the game. Newmarket were unstoppable at this stage as they rattled off points through John Lane, John Ryan and Kevin O’Sullivan. In the nineteenth minute, Newmarket cut through the Dromtariffe rearguard once more with John Lane linking superbly with Tony O’Keeffe before sidestepping a couple of defenders and supplying the most subtle of finishes to the corner of the net. A relentless attacking display saw further points for John Lane and Tony O’Keeffe before Dromtariffe gained respite with a second goal. A resounding first half Newmarket performance finished with John Lane pointing to establish a lead of 2-11 to 2-0 at the turnover.

Moments into the second half Dromtariffe registered their opening point. Newmarket eventually got into their rhythm again with Colin O’Sullivan pointing spectacularly in the eighth minute. As the end of the third quarter approached, Newmarket worked diligently to turnover Dromtariffe possession with John Ryan and Tony O’Keeffe involved in supplying Kevin O’Sullivan in front of goal and he did superbly to rattle the net with an unstoppable shot. John Ryan pointed next as the sides traded points. The hard working David O’Flynn was rewarded for his endeavours by adding the next two points for Newmarket. As the game entered the final ten minutes, Tony O’Keeffe claimed the limelight as he firstly pointed before completing his hat trick with two goals in three minutes after twice being supplied in great positions by David O’Flynn. Dromtariffe had a final point but a terrific Newmarket display was capped with Kevin O’Sullivan adding the closing point of the hour.
