Intermediates continue on winning ways

Newmarket’s intermediate footballers maintained their winning start to Division 3 of the league when they recorded a fine victory away to Nemo Rangers on Sunday by 1-11 to 0-9.

The home side began well and opened the scoring with a point after five minutes. Newmarket in their first real attack were awarded a free in the seventh minute. John Lane took the free and his kick dropped dangerously on the edge of the square with Nicky Flanagan adding a deft touch that ended in the back of the Nemo net. The home side converted a free after twelve minutes before Newmarket captain, David O’Flynn ended a fine move by pointing in the next passage of play. Newmarket increased their lead through the impressive John Lane and yet again David O’Flynn led the way with another point. Nemo Rangers reduced the deficit by scoring two points but T.J. Bodie added a brace of points to restore a four point advantage for an impressive Newmarket side. Nemo Rangers pointed next but Newmarket full forward Tony O’Keeffe was rewarded for his hard endeavour with the final score of the half which left Newmarket ahead by 1-6 to 0-5 at the turnover.

Newmarket increased their advantage after the restart when the in form John Lane was on hand to convert two frees within five minutes after he had been upended on both occasions. Nemo had their first score of the half after eleven minutes as Newmarket’s defence impressed in front of goalkeeper Niall O’Connor who produced one super save during this period, in a fine individual performance. Denys O’Brien took control at midfield and he landed a super long range point at the end of the third quarter to leave Newmarket in front by 1-9 to 0-6. Nemo Rangers tried hard to turn the game around and did get the next two scores but a determined Newmarket side responded and had points through Tony O’Keeffe and John Lane.
