U21 Footballers win close encounter
Newmarket’s under 21 footballers overcame a strong challenge from Knocknagree to claim a one point win, 0-9 to 1-5 in a very blustery, floodlit Knocknagree on Friday night.
John Lane opened the scoring with a fine point after two minutes. Knocknagree answered with two points from frees before John Lane levelled proceedings with a well taken free. The sides exchanged a further four points with John Lane and Michael Kenneally replying on each occasion to a Knocknagree score. Knocknagree playing with the aid of the elements edged in front again before they struck for what proved to be the games only goal, two minutes from the interval. This left the home side in front by 1-5 to 0-4 at the turnover.
Newmarket began a very strong display at the restart, with a point by Kevin O’Sullivan after just fifteen seconds. John Ryan and John Lane added frees to reduce the deficit during the third quarter. Another pointed free from John Ryan tied the scores as the game entered the final ten minutes. It wasn’t until the fifty eighth minute when Michael Kenneally scored the winning point, giving Newmarket a one point win and a final scoreline of 0-9 to 1-5.
