Newmarket’s under 21 footballers progressed to the County semi final when they defeated Glanmire in the replayed quarter final at Kildorrery on Sunday evening by 0-9 to 0-7 after a dour contest.
Glanmire took the lead with a point in the third minute but Kevin O’Sullivan surged forward to kick an equalizing point two minutes later. John Lane and John Ryan both converted placed balls as Newmarket utilized their possession in attack. Glanmire pointed next in the twelvth minute and despite getting into good positions and having scorable opportunities, this proved to be their last score of the half. Newmarket’s forwards capitalized on the chances that came their way and Nicky Flanagan slotted over two fine points after some impressive build up play from his teammates. This left Newmarket in front at the break by 0-5 to 0-2 after some fine defensive play all through the half.
Glanmire resumed with an early converted free but a tight third quarter unfolded and both attacks failing to make an impact against resolute defences. John Ryan pointed a free as the game entered the final quarter to restore a three point lead. With less than ten minutes to play Glanmire pointed but this sparked a burst from Newmarket. Team captain Bart Daly went forward and kicked an inspirational point before Newmarket unlocked the Glanmire defence and T.J. Bodie knocked over two fine points. This gave Newmarket a commanding lead in the circumstances but Glanmire reacted in fine style and quickly knocked over three points in just a couple of minutes. A tense conclusion followed but Newmarket held out for a fine victory and a date with Macroom in the semi final.
