Sunday morning last saw Newmarket host Castlemagner in round 2 of the Duhallow junior A league and in doing so, secure their opening points of the competition.

Following the recent narrow defeat to Banteer, the home side were out to banish the last minute loss.

Despite good early scoring from Cathal Browne, Conor and Darren O’Keeffe, Castlemagner kept a pace with Newmarket and trailed by a point on fourteen minutes, with the scoreboard reading 0-06 to 0-05. A key goal through Conor O’Keeffe two minutes later opened up a gap Castlemagner would struggle to close, for the remainder of the contest. A further free and 65 from O’Keeffe, followed by a point from centre-forward Kevin O’Sullivan meant that Newmarket maintained their goal lead at the break, 1-09 to 0-09.

With O’Keeffe continuing his scoring after the resumption, coupled with a hat-trick of points from full-forward Cathal Browne, Newmarket pushed the advantage out to six on 38 minutes, 1-13 to 0-10. Points from play through Kevin O’Sullivan and Darren O’Keeffe widened the gap further. Not withstanding a mini revival from Castlemagner, Newmarket were able to maintain a distance, with scores from Conor O’Keeffe and Cathal Browne. Indeed, the closing ten minutes belonged to Browne as he rattled off Newmarket’s last four points, to ensure his side saw out the contest with a 1-20 to 0-16 win.
