Newmarket travelled to Kanturk on Sunday and lost out in a poor Ducon Cup contest by 0-8 to 0-5.

Kanturk took the lead on pointing a third minute free but both sides struggled as unforced errors and turnover of possession became the main features of the game. Newmarket eventually got off the mark with Shane Murphy finding the target from a narrow angle after fourteen minutes of play. Kanturk edged ahead in the twentieth minute and it wasn’t until the final moments of the half that Newmarket found some form with Shane Murphy and then a fine individual effort from Matthew Fitzpatrick edging Newmarket ahead by 0-3 to 0-2 at the end of a disappointing first half.

The fare failed to improve in the second half and it was Kanturk who eventually seized the initiative adding a point after eight minutes to tie the sides again and hit the front by adding two further points by the end of the third quarter. Newmarket failed to make an impact on the game and Kanturk pulled further in front as a result of scoring two more points. As the game entered the final five minutes, Newmarket finally got their first score of the half from Maurice Feehan and John Ryan added another to reduce the deficit to two points. The home side however sealed the issue by scoring another point to run out victors by 0-8 to 0-5.
