Newmarket maintained their fine winning sequence in the Ducon Cup with a fourth successive victory at home to Kanturk by 2-12 to 1-6 in slippery damp conditions at Newmarket on Sunday.
Kanturk were first to score before the impressive Shane Murphy equalized in the fourth minute. T.J. Bodie edged Newmarket in front but Kanturk enjoyed a productive period at the end of the first quarter scoring two points either side of a goal to take a four point lead. Gerard Casey surged forward to point for Newmarket before an equalizing goal arrived in the twenty third minute. Full back Mark Murphy powered forward and set up Timothy Murphy who sent a cracking shot from twenty yards crashing off the crossbar before Shane Murphy was on hand to calmly slot the rebound home. T.J. Bodie gave Newmarket the lead and they turned over in front by 1-4 to 1-3.
Exchanges were close after the resumption before Barry O’Leary slotted over a fine point after nine minutes. Shane Murphy quickly added another as Newmarket went on to enjoy a period of dominance. John Cronin converted a free in style, while Shane Anthony Murphy, T.J. Bodie and Bart Daly also got in on the act with an array of fine scores. Kanturk then registered their first point of the half but the result was put beyond doubt when John Cronin drilled a ground shot to the back of the net for his sides second goal. Kanturk pointed again but John Cronin’s impressive shooting added two further points before Kanturk brought proceedings to an end with a score in injury time.
