Late Push Secures Draw For Minors

A flurry of late points rescued Newmarket as they drew 0-14 to 2-8 with Knocknagree in the league semi final played at Cullen on Sunday.

Playing against a stiff breeze Kevin O’Sullivan kicked Newmarket in to a second minute lead. Knocknagree responded by getting the next four points before John Ryan landed his first point after fifteen minutes. The sides then exchanged four points with John Ryan twice on target. Knocknagree struck for their opening goal in the twenty third minute before John Ryan kept Newmarket in touch. Knocknagree scored the final point of the half which left them in front by 1-7 to 0-5.

John Lane resumed with a quick Newmarket point but Knocknagree scored a second goal to take a seven point lead, eight minutes into the half. Points from John Ryan, John Lane twice and Bart Daly brought Newmarket right back into contention as they began to dominate and play the majority of the game in Knocknagree’s half. Two John Lane scores left just the minimum of margins between the sides with only minutes remaining. Knocknagree appeared to seal the issue with a late point but Newmarket refused to relinquish their title and Brian O’Riordan landed an excellent long range point. Newmarket came again and it was Bart Daly who snatched an amazing draw for in the dying moments of the game as the sides will have to clash again after a thrilling climax.
