Newmarket were defeated 1-13 to 2-5 by Millstreet in their opening game of the Kanturk Credit Union junior hurling league, played in perfect conditions at Newmarket on Sunday.
Millstreet opened the scoring before Kevin O’Sullivan equalized with a point within a minute. The sides exchanged points again with Colin O’Sullivan landing a long range point. Millstreet edged in front before they struck for a twelveth minute goal. Kevin O’Sullivan pointed next but Millstreet restored their four point advantage. John Lane who was making his debut at this level, scored a wonder point from the sideline and Donnacha O’Dea was also on target in response to three Millstreet points which left the score 1-7 to 0-5 after an entertaining half’s play.
Millstreet increased their lead but a fantastic overhead pull by Martin O’Doherty from a Barry O’Leary delivery resulted in Newmarket’s first goal. Millstreet managed to pick off five points in succession during the half, as despite a fine performance Newmarket failed to convert their chances into scores. There were some fine performances in defence with Anthony Crowley, John McSweeney and Pa O’Brien in fine form with Kieran Hayes and Donnacha Fitzpatrick also dominant. Newmarket were eventually rewarded when some fine build up play ended with Maurice Feehan finding Martin O’Doherty and he struck a powerful shot to the back of the net for his second goal, which left the score at the final whistle 1-13 to 2-5.
