Youthful Under 21 hurlers bow out of championship

A youthful and depleted Newmarket team exited the Duhallow under 21 hurling championship when they endured a 3-13 to 1-8 defeat away to Millstreet on Saturday evening.

Faced to lineout without a few key players due to injury, Newmarket faced a very difficult task from the outset. The opening score of the game came in the fourth minute with Millstreet pointing and they repeated this a minute later. A commanding beginning by the home side was further strengthened by a goal and a ninth minute point. Gavin Forde scored Newmarket’s first point of the game on converting a long range free in the fifteenth minute but the home side got through a battling Newmarket rearguard for a second goal in the nineteenth minute. They added another two points before striking a third goal to take a very commanding advantage. To their credit, Newmarket battled gamely and were led by some excellent displays in defence from Paudie Allen and Nicky Barrett while Billy Daly battled tirelessly for the team. The half ended with Gavin Forde pointing for a second time before the outstanding Jacko Flaherty also pointed to leave Newmarket trailing, 3-5 to 0-3 at half time.

Millstreet resumed the second half by adding five points to their tally in a nine minute spell before substitute Con McAuliffe added a fine point after some trojan play from Jack Birtley. Newmarket grew in confidence as Gavin Forde pointed before Eddie Allen struck a fine finish to the net after being set up by the influential Jonathan Flaherty. Millsteet had the next point but Conor Cronin also found the target from a long range free. As the game entered the final ten minutes the sides went on to share the last four points as Newmarket added to their tally through Jonathan Flaherty and Gavin Forde as they put up a battling display to the very end.

Hurlers defeated in Under 21 hurling championship

Kanturk had a clear victory over Newmarket by 2-14 to 0-8 in the opening round of the Duhallow under 21 hurling championship played in ideal conditions at Newmarket on Saturday evening.

Newmarket were first off the mark with Gavin Forde slotting over a pointed free in the second minute. The early exchanges were tight all over the field with Kanturk ending a long period of play without a score on pointing an eleventh minute equalizer.

Gavin Forde edged Newmarket in front but Kanturk responded with a point in the sixteenth minute. Paul Verling regained a slender advantage for Newmarket with a well taken point from a narrow angle following a long sideline delivery from Conor Cronin but once again Kanturk gained parity almost instantly. For the fourth time, Newmarket led when Conor Cronin scored a fine point but in following with what had preceded, Kanturk found a levelling score a minute later. As the half entered the closing minutes, Kanturk stepped up the tempo and four quick fire points in six minutes changed the complexion of the scoreboard. Newmarket’s rearguard which played admirably were under incessant pressure and crucially two goals in the dying minutes of the half gave Kanturk a considerable 2-8 to 0-4 half time advantage.

Newmarket resumed with Gavin Forde converting a long range free from midfield within a minute of the restart. Kanturk added three points in succession in a fourteen minute spell as Newmarket competed gamely with their opponents. Ian Flanagan added a brace of Newmarket points as the scoring rate dipped in the second half. The sides went on to share a brace of points with Ian Flanagan on target for a third time. The game concluded with two Kanturk points as they played out the contest.

Encouraging display from under 21 hurlers

Newmarket were defeated by Millstreet in the Duhallow under 21 hurling championship game played in ideal conditions at Newmarket on Sunday evening by 1-15 to 0-11.

Newmarket got off the mark when John Lane (who earlier in the day played a key role for the Duhallow senior football team) pointed from play in the second minute. Ian Flanagan doubled the advantage with a well taken point from a tight angle. Millstreet got off the mark in the seventh minute from a free and it was their accuracy from placed balls throughout the game that paved the way for their ultimate success. John Lane was similarly on target from a free but Millstreet added the next two points to tie the sides for the first time at 0-3 apiece. Millstreet edged in front with the next score but Newmarket responded and they added the next three points with two John Lane efforts either side of a score from the excellent Conor Cronin.

Millstreet ended the half in the ascendancy and were clinically on target five times from placed balls in the closing minutes of the half to enjoy a lead of 0-9 to 0-6 at the turnover.

Millstreet resumed with the next two points before John Lane scored a neat point from play for Newmarket in the sixth minute. The sides competed gamely throughout and the next four points were shared, John Lane and Conor Cronin on target for Newmarket and the game entered the final quarter with the score at 0-13 to 0-9. Millstreet added a point before crucially finding the net for the only goal of the game with twelve minutes remaining which gave them a clear advantage. Newmarket failed to relent and led by Conor Cronin, John Ryan, Robert Stack, John Lane and Ian Flanagan they tried to redress the issue with the latter two pointing, Ian Flanagan pointing a particularly sublime score from distance. Millstreet however closed in on victory and added the final score of the game but Newmarket will be encouraged by a number of individual displays and will regroup for another day for a second chance in round two.

U21 hurlers bow out to Kanturk

Newmarket bowed out of the Duhallow under 21 hurling championship when defeated by Kanturk at floodlit Mallow on Wednesday evening last by 2-16 to 0-13.

The poor weather that preceded the game made conditions difficult but Newmarket began brightly when Denis McCarthy pointed within a minute. John Lane who proved prolific from dead balls added a second in the fifth minute but Kanturk responded and a brace of points tied the sides for the only time by the eighth minute. Kanturk took the lead on adding two points before they scored a fine goal in the eleventh minute to take a five point lead. Newmarket settled and John Lane added two points by the end of the quarter to leave the score 0-4 to 1-4. The sides provided good entertainment in trying conditions but it was Kanturk who found it easier to add to their tally and added three further points against a resolute Newmarket rearguard. Newmarket once more responded well and were rewarded on John Lane pointing either side of a fine score from Billy Daly as the gap was reduced to three points again. The sides exchanged points with John Lane on target for a sixth time during the half before Kanturk took full advantage of the closing moments of the half and critically added a goal and a point in this period to enjoy a lead of 2-9 to 0-8 at half time.

Kanturk were first to add to their tally in the second half but Conor Cronin replied on striking two magnificent points from distance for Newmarket. John Lane added two points as Newmarket reduced the deficit to 2-10 to 0-12, nine minutes into the half. Kanturk gradually gained the ascendancy thanks to their ability to add further scores and in the next ten minutes added three points in succession. John Lane brought Newmarket within two goals with the game well into the final ten minutes but a more clinical Kanturk sealed the issue with a succession of fine scores to qualify for the semi final.

Newmarket can reflect on a commendable display against strong opposition. A feature of the performance was the display of the defence with Timmy O’Keeffe outstanding with John Scanlon and Kevin O’Sullivan also prominent.

Newmarket’s under 21 hurlers progressed to the quarter final of the championship when they defeated Meelin by 3-14 to 4-9 in a thrilling contest at Meelin on Sunday.

Newmarket began brightly when Ian Flanagan clipped over a neat point in the second minute. Despite an encouraging start Newmarket were rattled in the fourth minute when a speculative Meelin effort ended in the back of the net and this was followed by a seventh minute point. Newmarket regained their composure and two John Ryan frees reduced the deficit but Meelin had the next two points to establish a 1-3 to 0-3 lead by the seventeenth minute. Newmarket hurled well throughout the field and were rewarded with a string of scores. John Lane pointed a free before Ian Flanagan added his second point. John Lane tied the sides for the only time with a fine point from play following some neat teamwork, at 0-6 to 1-3 by the twenty second minute. John Ryan gave Newmarket the lead and a minute later and their endeavour was further rewarded when Kieran Lehane finished to the net from the edge of the square. Meelin replied with a point but the excellent Robert Stack added a fine point for Newmarket. The sides exchanged points before the break with a John Lane point leaving Newmarket in front by 1-9 to 1-5 following an entertaining half of hurling.

Robert Stack finished well for the first point of the second half before Meelin got the next two points. Conor Cronin converted a long range free to re-establish a four point advantage. A turning point came twelve minutes into the half when John Lane on taking a close in free, elected to shoot for goal and he found the net for a crucial second Newmarket goal which he followed up with two more points. Meelin responded to this nine point deficit by gaining a second goal which was supplemented with a point. Newmarket were further boosted when some clever play from the inside forward line left Ian Flanagan bearing in on goal and he finished neatly for a third goal. A brace of points were exchanged as once more John Lane was on target. However, Meelin as expected came with a storming finish and two quickfire goals added to a climactic finish but Newmarket just held out and an excellent all round performance was rewarded with victory.

Newmarket lose opening round of Under 21 championship

Newmarket were defeated by Banteer in the opening round of the Duhallow Under 21 hurling championship at the latter’s venue on Saturday evening where the home side emerged victors by 2-15 to 1-8.

Banteer were quick off the mark and pointed in the second minute. Newmarket gained parity in the fifth minute thanks to a Bryan O’Connell point. The sides then exchanged points with John Lane supplying a second equalizer for Newmarket in the tenth minute. Newmarket gained the lead in the thirteenth minute when a sideline cut from Conor Cronin was flicked on by Robert Stack towards John Lane who played a wonderful crossfield pass to the onrushing Kevin O’Sullivan who caught the ball and raced in on goal before supplying a fine finish to the Banteer net for an excellent team goal. It was Banteer however who gained the impetus and they began to take control. Three points in a row had the sides level for a third time at 0-5 to 1-2 after twenty one minutes. Newmarket’s defence were under incessant pressure as Banteer added two further points. Four minutes before the break they eventually found a way past Newmarket’s excellent goalkeeper Paul Verling, who after producing a number of fine saves was finally beaten. Another Banteer point resulted in a spell that yielded a goal and six points without reply. Newmarket recovered late in the half and were denied a goal before John Lane pointed a free which left the score reading 1-8 to 1-3 at half time.

Banteer enjoyed the better of the opening period in the second half and after pointing in the fourth minute in their next attack they engineered their second goal of the game to enjoy a nine point advantage. Newmarket pointed when the impressive Conor Cronin found the target from long range before John Lane added a free. The sides exchanged two points as Newmarket provided plenty of endeavour throughout the half with John Lane on target. As the game entered the closing period Banteer were more clinical and added a string of points in the final minutes with John Lane adding two points for Newmarket in this final spell of the game.

Newmarket under 21 hurling team defeated by Meelin

Newmarket’s under 21 hurling team suffered a disappointing defeat against Meelin in the semi final of the Duhallow championship at Meelin on Sunday, the home side emerging easy winners by 0-18 to 0-5.

The early exchanges were tight and close on a perfect playing surface before Meelin registered the first score in the fifth minute and quickly followed with a second three minutes later. Newmarket got off the mark when their most potent forward, John Lane converted a free in the ninth minute. The sides then exchanged a brace of points with John Lane finding the target for Newmarket before a Meelin point gave them an advantage of 0-4 to 0-2 at the end of the first quarter. Once more the sides traded points, again, John Lane finding the target for Newmarket. Meelin proved more clinical and sharper as the game developed and a burst of three points in as many minutes created a five point lead. Newmarket responded with T.J. Bodie neatly pointing after some good build up play and John Lane pointed another placed ball as the half entered the closing five minutes. Meelin ended the half by adding another point and they enjoyed a four point advantage, 0-9 to 0-5 at the turnover.

Meelin added a point within three minutes of the restart but in a tight third quarter both attacks were kept at bay, however once Meelin got the next point they cruised to victory in the final fifteen minutes as they added nine unanswered points in total during the second half while unfortunately for Newmarket they failed to add to their tally. Newmarket were put under intense pressure towards the end of the game but the defence did well, particularly goalkeeper John Ryan and Nicky Flanagan who were in fine form throughout.

Newmarket bowed out of this years U-21 Hurling Championship after a very disappointing defeat to Kanturk in ideal conditions in Meelin on a score line of 2-15 to 8 points on Saturday last.

Kanturk got the first score of the game after one minute. Newmarket hit back with a couple of points from two John Lane frees to take the lead for the first and only time of the game. Kanturk reacted quickly with a goal on six minutes and two points in the next three minutes to leave it 1-3 to 2 points after ten minutes. Disaster struck on the eleventh minute when Kanturk struck home a twenty-one yard free to the top of the net which really was a fatal blow to the team. Kanturk added another point to lead by eight points. Newmarket finally got another point from another John Lane free but Kanturk got four points in six minutes. Newmarket got another point on twenty-eight minutes from a John Lane free. Kanturk replied with the same but Newmarket did get another John Lane free just before the break to leave it 2-9 to 5 points at half time. Ultimately discipline cost Newmarket dearly in the first half; 1-7 of Kanturk’s 2-9 came from placed balls.

Newmarket began the second half with another John Lane free. Kanturk got three more points before John Lane once again put over another free to leave the score line 2-12 to 7 points to Kanturk at the three quarter stage. Really Newmarket were only playing for pride at this stage and the spirited efforts from the captain Sean Irwin, Kevin O’ Sullivan, Brian O’Riordan and Robert Stack kept Newmarket battling away in a game which was very hard to keep going. Newmarket got their eight point from John Lane with ten minutes to go, this proved to be Newmarket’s final score of the game. Kanturk added a final three points in the final minutes to leave the final score 2-15 to 8 points in a very disappointing game from Newmarket’s point of view. Newmarket did miss a lot of chances from distance and the fact that Newmarket got no score from play made it very difficult for the team.

The Newmarket team can be very proud of their efforts this year. They did themselves no justice on Saturday last but it was evident that there is a fine bunch of hurlers here which can get over this result to succeed in the future. The coaches and selectors had a big part to play in the development of these players over the year and they must be complimented highly for putting in a great effort and a lot of time into this team.

Newmarket’s under 21 hurlers advanced in the championship after recording an impressive 2-20 to 3-7 victory over Millstreet in ideal conditions at Castlemagner on Sunday.

Newmarket got off to a flying start with John Lane and Robert Stack pointing within three minutes before Millstreet got on the board. The sides then exchanged points with Nicky Flanagan finding the target from long range for Newmarket. John Lane added a brace of points before Millstreet gained parity thanks to an eleventh minute goal, 0-5 to 1-2. Newmarket maintained their fine scoring rate with John Lane, Michael Kenneally and Conor Cronin pointing by the end of the first quarter. The prolific John Lane added the next three points as Newmarket impressed throughout the field. Timothy Murphy who had a fine game at midfield, pointed in injury time to leave the score 0-12 to 1-2 in Newmarkets favour at half time.

Newmarket increased their advantage when T.J. Bodie slotted over an early point with Millstreet replying within a minute. Kevin O’Sullivan converted a long range free before John Lane again found the target. Millstreet pointed next but Newmarket hit their first goal at the end of the third quarter when Ian Flanagan finished neatly to the net from the edge of the square.Millstreet were next to score but Newmarket found the net again when Robert Stack goalled. Millstreet rallied instantly with their second goal and further reduced the deficit thanks to a point and a third goal, to leave the score reading 2-15 to 3-6 as the game entered the closing five minutes. Newmarket bounced back with John Lane and Kevin O’Sullivan twice, pointing. A resilient Millstreet side pointed next but Newmarket rounded off their win, when fittingly the dynamic John Lane added two more points, to take his personal tally to eleven points.

Newmarket U21 hurlers lose first round of championship, wait on result of the back door draw

Newmarket ‘s U-21 Hurlers lost to Kanturk in the first round of the championship on Friday night last at Kanturk. Newmarket lost on a score line of 3-5 to 1-7 in an entertaining clash with last years finalists.

Newmarket got off a flying start when full-forward Michael Kenneally goaled with an unstoppable shot to the top corner after three minutes. Kanturk replied instantly with a point on four minutes and a scrappy goal from close range two minutes later. Newmarket levelled on fourteen minutes with a free from Kevin O’ Sullivan. They then took the lead for the second time in the match a minute later when the hard working Michael Kenneally scored a fine individual point after a long run under pressure from Kanturk defenders. Kanturk replied straight away after the puck out with another point. Both teams exchanged points for the remainder of the half with John Lane scoring two points in the process. The half ended with both teams level on 1-4 apiece in a very tight encounter with scores hard to come by.

The second half began with a point for Newmarket after the very impressive Kevin O’ Sullivan fielded brilliantly under pressure and scored a good point a minute into the half. Two minutes later Kevin pointed again to put Newmarket up by two points. They suffered a setback on thirty five minutes when Kanturk pointed and goaled on quick succession to turn the score line around to lead by two. Newmarket replied with another Kevin O’ Sullivan point three minutes later, unfortunately this proved to be their final score of the game. After Newmarket failed to capitalise on many score able opportunities from both placed balls and play Kanturk killed off all hopes of a comeback with a third goal with four minutes to go. The game ended with a four point win for Kanturk after a very spirited Newmarket performance.

Newmarket can take a lot of positives from the performance in which a few harsh decisions went against them. They performed admirably and never gave up throughout the game. Newmarket had some good individual performances with John Scanlon hurling well at centre back and wing back Niall O’ Connor performing good alongside him. Kevin O’ Sullivan can be happy with a final tally of four points from midfield. Up front Michael Kenneally had a great game contributing a goal and a point overall ably assisted by the industrious and hard working Robert Stack who created many openings through-out the game. Newmarket must wait to find out who they will play in the back door now.

U-21 Hurlers out of Championship

Newmarkets under 21 hurlers were knocked out of the championship by a strong Tullylease side 2-15 to 1-9 at Freemount on Friday evening last.

Tullylease stormed out of the blocks hitting three points in as many minutes. They built up a seven point lead before claiming the games opening goal in the twelvth minute. Two more points were added before Newmarket eventually got off the mark thanks to a Shane Anthony Murphy point after twenty minutes. John Lane added a second but a Tullylease point left the score reading 1-10 to 0-2 at the halfway mark.

Tullylease resumed with an instant point with John Lane then hitting a brace of points for Newmarket. Nicky Flanagan and T J Bodie scored as Newmarket showed a marked improvement. Tullylease kept their big lead intact but Newmarket performed well to the end with Kevin O’Sullivan pointing twice and John Lane also on target during the half. Tullylease struck a late goal but Newmarket rounded off the game when Michael Kenneally found the net with the final piece of action of the game.

U-21s Lose Out After Improved Second Half

A disasterous opening half left Newmarket in a perilous position as they were defeated by Banteer, 4-14 to 2-8 in the first round of the Duhallow Under 21 hurling championship game played at Kanturk on Friday evening.

The opening score of the game did not come until the ninth minute but instantly the floodgates opened for Banteer as they built up a five point lead before adding three goals in a five minute spell. Newmarket were being blown away and Banteer ended the half with a lead of 3-10 with Newmarket failing to register a score.

To their credit Newmarket resumed a much different side and instantly pointed through Michael Kenneally and John Lane. A fourth Banteer goal duly arrived before Newmarket pointed through Shane Murphy and John Lane. Two goals within a minute maintained Newmarkets momentum as Michael Kenneally and Robert Stack both goalled from close range. John Lane pointed before Banteer then hit two further points. John Lane again and a brace of points from Shane Anthony Murphy ensured Newmarket reduced the margin before the finish.
