Two late points from Dromtariffe brought to an end Newmarket’s three year reign as Duhallow under 21 football champions as the home side edged an even contest by 2-9 to 1-10 in an entertaining quarter final contest played in ideal conditions at Dromtariffe on Saturday afternoon.

Newmarket began brightly and John Ryan scored a fine point within a minute before converting a free in the fifth minute. Dromtariffe got off the mark in the seventh minute before a second point had the sides level for the first time after eleven minutes. Newmarket edged in front again thanks to a John Lane point and Conor Cronin increased the advantage with an excellent effort. The game turned in the twentieth minute when Dromtariffe struck for two quickfire goals and they suddenly enjoyed a four point advantage. Newmarket responded with John Lane answering with two points but it was Dromtariffe who had the final score of the half to turn over in front by 2-3 to 0-6.

Dromtariffe increased their lead within a minute of the restart but two minutes later a superb move, initiated by a long delivery from Paul Cashman saw John Lane gather possession and he laid the ball into the path of the on rushing T.J. Brosnan who crashed the ball brilliantly to the bottom corner of the Dromtariffe net to reduce the arrears to a solitary point. With the game finely balanced and in full flow the sides exchanged the next four points with John Lane twice on target for Newmarket. As Newmarket pressed hard for an equalizer they were guilty of squandering a number of opportunites before Ian Flanagan eventually tied proceedings, 2-6 to 1-9 with nine minutes remaining. Dromtariffe were next to take the lead but within a minute Newmarket were on terms again with T.J. Brosnan drilling the ball over the bar.

It was the home side however who made possession count in the closing moments and crucially found the target twice to deny Newmarket.

The Newmarket team was…

Newmarket kicked off their U21 A Football Championship defence with a winning start over Boherbue in a cold Knocknagree on Friday night last.

Boherbue took the lead with a point in the early minutes but John lane responded quickly with a neat finish. A slow start meant Newmarket were on the defensive for the opening ten minutes. Boherbue took the lead once again on the 8th minute but Newmarket responded in good fashion.

After some good harrassing Kieran Lehane gathered the ball from Eddie Allen and pointed from the tightest of angles to level the scores once more. Boherbue again took the lead but John Lane pointed the next two scores to put Newmarket in front on the 24th minute. Robert Stack scored a fine long range effort after some good work from Ian Flanagan and Jack Birthley on the wing to make it 5 points to 3 in favour of Newmarket at the break of play.

Boherbue got off to another good start in the 2nd half and at the three quarter mark led proceedings on a scoreline of 0-7 to 0-6 with T.J. Brosnan kicking the point for Newmarket. It was in the final 10 minutes that Newmarket really stood up and John Lane equalised on 50 minutes. Then after an excellently placed kick out from the very solid David Quinlan, Robert Stack fielded and from the resulting play Newmarket gained the lead once more when Paul Verling kicked a neat point on 52 minutes. Ian Flanagan kicked the insurance point with a couple of minutes remaining.

The Newmarket defence stood up to a huge onslaught of pressure from the Boherbue attack and held out to record a hard fought win in the first round of the Championship. Brendan Stack, Mikey O’ Leary and Jack Birthley had very solid preformances in the defence and played very well on the night. Robert Stack and Conor Cronin did a good job at midfield while the forwards kicked some vital points when really needed. It was a very committed and spirited performance from the team and they were rewarded with a good win at the end of the night in Knocknagree.

The Newmarket team was…

Newmarket were defeated by a strong Ballincollig side in the semi final of the County Under 21 Football Championship on a scoreline of 2-10 to 0-7 at windswept Mallow on Sunday afternoon.

Newmarket played with the aid of a hugely advantageous wind in the first half but from the outset struggled to turn this to their favour. Ballincollig managed to get off the mark within the first minute but Newmarket were on terms in the fourth minute thanks to a converted free from John Ryan. The Muskerry champions edged in front again in the seventh minute but once more John Ryan gained parity on pointing in the thirteenth minute. Newmarket took the lead for the only time in the contest when Nicky Flanagan pointed on fifteen minutes but Ballincollig soon ensured the sides were on level terms for a third time.

The physically strong and athletic Ballincollig mastered playing against the elements and the game took a significant twist in the twenty third minute when they were awarded a penalty which was dispatched emphatically to the roof of the net. A buoyed Ballincollig further enhanced their strong position when they struck for a second goal just prior to the interval. A shell shocked Newmarket finished the half with a point when Bart Daly pointed a monstrous free from distance but faced a major uphill battle on trailing 2-3 to 0-4 at half time.

Newmarket defended resolutely for the second half hour and withstood several periods of Ballincollig pressure. They forced their opponents into wayward shooting and conceded just two points in the third quarter while John Ryan was on target at the other end. A five minute spell yielded Ballincollig’s best period of the half and four points followed. A resilient Newmarket battled hard throughout and Bart Daly scored his second point with seven minutes remaining. The sides went on to exchange points before the finish with John Ryan registering the final point of the game.

This proved to be the end of another immensely successful season for Newmarket’s under 21 football team who claimed a third successive Duhallow title in the process and proceeded to their third successive County semi final.

The Newmarket team was…

Newmarket’s under 21 football team qualified for the County semi final, for the third successive year, when they earned a hard fought but merited victory over Ballymartle in the quarter final by 1-11 to 2-6 on a greasy Coachford surface on Sunday evening.

Both sides took time to settle before Newmarket’s potent full forward John Lane registered the first point of the hour in the seventh minute. He added a second from a free in the tenth minute before Ballymartle got off the mark with a thirteenth minute score. A sublime move that spanned the length of the pitch sparked the contest to life as Newmarket in full flow blitzed through the length of the pitch with some slick passing before John Scanlon placed John Lane in on goal and he finished expertly to the net in the fifteenth minute. Ballymartle hit back with a goal of their own within three minutes and a quickfire point tied the sides at 1-2 apiece after twenty minutes. Newmarket gained the advantage towards the end of the half with Nicky Flanagan and John Ryan on target; and they turned over in front by 1-4 to 1-2.

Ballymartle halved the deficit within a minute of the restart before Bart Daly landed a huge converted free from long distance for Newmarket. John Lane and John Ryan helped Newmarket into a four point lead before Ballymartle added their next score. The impressive Nicky Flanagan then pointed for Newmarket before the game took another twist when Ballymartle went on to score a second goal. They added a point at the end of the quarter which tied the sides for only the second time at 1-8 to 2-5. Newmarket regained the impetus as the game entered the final ten minutes with Nicky Flanagan converting with an excellent pointed free from a difficult angle. Within a minute John Lane raced in on goal to score a fine individual point. Ballymartle responded with a point but Newmarket were not to be outdone and once more John Lane was on hand to score a crucial point and Newmarket edged a tight contest by 1-11 to 2-6.

The Newmarket team was…

A testimony of the Dromtariffe pitch was the fact it was playable considering the torrential rain showers it withstood in the hours leading up to the game. Despite playing against the breeze in the first half, Newmarket started brightly and the quick thinking Nicky Flanagan found John Ryan from a free and he dispatched a fine point in the second minute. Knocknagree tied the proceedings on converting a long distance free and a second point gave them the advantage after seven minutes.

Newmarket levelled within a minute when some fine approach play was rewarded when Kevin O’Sullivan burst forward to kick an excellent score.

Newmarket grew in confidence with corner forward John Lane in terrific form. He scored his first point of the game in the thirteenth minute before John Ryan doubled the advantage instantly. A turning point in the game came in the eighteenth minute when Newmarket were indebted to goalkeeper David Quinlan who produced a stunning save which lifted the rest of the side. Although Knocknagree pointed next, Newmarket went on dominate the remainder of the half. A feature of the Newmarket display throughout the hour was the brilliant display of the six defenders who gave an exhibition in defending with David Guiney and Conor Cronin prominent. At the other end Newmarket produced a scoring blitz in the final five minutes of the half. The prolific John Lane was inspirational and he scored three points in as many minutes to confirm Newmarket’s dominance. The half ended when John Ryan slotted over a free and Newmarket went into the break in front by 0-8 to 0-3 after an excellent first half performance.

The second half resumed and the deteriorating conditions contributed to a scrappy affair. Once more John Lane was on target for Newmarket but a similar score for Knocknagree proved to be the only two scores during the first twenty minutes of the half. It was Newmarket’s defence that were to the fore again as they withstood everything that Knocknagree threw at them. As the game entered the final ten minutes Newmarket found their rhythm again, firstly through influential midfielder Kevin O’Sullivan who scored a much needed point for Newmarket. The confidence began to flow again and Newmarket saw the game out to a conclusion with further points from Nicky Flanagan, Robert Stack and John Ryan to end up champions on recording a nine point victory.

Goalkeeper David Quinlan has been a revelation in his first season at this level, a penalty being the only goal conceded in four games. The full back line excelled with David Guiney, team captain Brian O’Riordan and Michael O’Leary inspirational to their teammates in front of them.

The half back line of Conor Cronin, Paul Cashman and Robert Stack were outstanding in keeping their defence intact and also as a base for the Newmarket attacking options. Kevin O’Sullivan and Bart Daly worked tirelessly throughout at midfield covering every blade of grass in trying conditions. The half forward line of Ian Flanagan, John Ryan and Nicky Flanagan were pivotal in the first half when Newmarket performed admirably despite playing against the elements and contributed four points between them. John Lane was a match winning forward with John Scanlon and Jerry McCarthy excellent in gaining possession and linking with their fellow teammates, which led to so many scores. Anthony Lynch and Eugene Bodie slotted into the side naturally when introduced and have played their part throughout a hard campaign.

Team captain Brian O’Riordan was presented with the cup by Duhallow Board Secretary, Tom Dennehy. Congratulations to team manager Pat O’Brien and his mentors on another memorable achievement for the club.

This particular panel of players have written their way into the clubs history. On winning Duhallow under 16 football league and championship titles in 2004, many of this panel of players have gone on to record 3 Duhallow minor football championships (2004-06), 2 Duhallow minor football leagues (2005-06), a County minor football league in 2005 where they also ended runners up in the championship final. They have now subsequently followed on the win 3 Duhallow under 21 football championships (2007-09) having also contested last years county final, a truly remarkable achievement.

Defending Duhallow under 21 football champions Newmarket had to dig deep when two late points from John Lane and John Ryan helped them edge past Kanturk by 1-12 to 0-13 at the end of a gripping semi final played at Boherbue on Saturday evening to duly qualify for a fourth successive Duhallow final in the grade.

Newmarket playing into the breeze, took the lead thanks to the accurate freetaking of John Ryan, who proved unerring during the hour. Kanturk levelled in the fifth minute before they added two more scores. John Ryan found the target in the thirteenth minute but Kanturk enjoyed the better of the possession and two points gave them a three point advantage by the eighteenth minute.

Newmarket had to up their performance and this was typified by the industrious Nicky Flanagan and an improved effort saw Kevin O’Sullivan crash a bullet of a shot off the Kanturk crossbar after some fine approach play. Bart Daly scored a much needed point with a classy individual score but Kanturk soon restored their three point lead. As the half finished Newmarket crucially surged forward for a few precious points. Bart Daly once more, scored a memorable effort from distance with John Ryan chipping in with his third point of the half. This left Newmarket trailing by just a solitary point 0-6 to 0-5 having endured a difficult first half.

Kanturk were boosted when they resumed with two early points in six minutes but Newmarket settled with John Ryan once more on target from a placed ball. In the eighth minute of the half the game took a significant twist. Ian Flanagan did extremely well to gain possession at midfield and a probing pass set Nicky Flanagan in motion and when John Lane set John Ryan through on goal his delicate chip rattled off the crossbar but Newmarket were alert to the situation and John Lane laid the ball off to John Scanlon who kicked the ball low to the back of the Kanturk net.

Kanturk answered with a point, as the tempo of the game went up a couple of gears. John Scanlon edged Newmarket in front again but a Kanturk point ensured parity for a third time at the end of the third quarter. Newmarket hit the front again through John Ryan and John Lane did well to increase the lead when punching a point after carving out a chance from a difficult angle. Kanturk halved the arrears but once more Bart Daly popped up with a crucial contribution in scoring his third point of the evening.

As the game entered the final moments Kanturk pointed to leave just a solitary point between the sides and they duly followed up with a fine equalizer as the game came to an epic conclusion, similar to last years drawn final between the two sides. However, a resolute Newmarket side found enough in reserve to surge forward in the next phase of play and at the end of a defence splitting move, John Lane did extremely well to keep his nerve to punch over his second point from a difficult angle. A buoyed Newmarket again gained possession from the kickout and John Ryan added another crucial point. This proved to be the final score and Newmarket emerged from a titanic struggle with a two point victory, 1-12 to0-13.

Defending champions Newmarket advanced to the semi final stages of the Duhallow under 21 football championship after claiming their second successive victory in the round robin series to duly finish top of their group, having travelled to Dromtariffe and defeated the home side by 0-12 to 1-3 on a fine Saturday afternoon.

Playing with the aid of a strong breeze, Newmarket quickly got off the mark when Anthony Lynch pointed in the first minute. John Ryan slotted over a third minute free as a fluent Newmarket began impressively. Ian Flanagan and Jerry McCarthy also added to the scoreboard in the opening quarter.

Newmarket were well marshalled in defence with David Guiney, Brian O’Riordan and Conor Cronin prominent while goalkeeper David Quinlan gave a very assured performance throughout the hour. Newmarket made their dominance pay with John Ryan and John Lane opening up a six point advantage. Six minutes before the interval, John Ryan was upended in the Dromtariffe square but the home goalkeeper duly blocked the resultant penalty. This failed to deter Newmarket as they finished the half with a few late points through John Scanlon, John Lane and the score of the match from Robert Stack who kicked emphatically from distance after some excellent approach play involving John Lane and John Ryan. This gave Newmarket a nine point cushion as they turned to face into the strong breeze.

Dromtariffe got off the mark within two minutes but Newmarket responded with John Lane claiming a fine point in the fifth minute. Dromtariffe increased the tempo but again Newmarket’s rearguard was resolute until the end of the third quarter when the home side added two points in quick succession. Newmarket squandered a few gilt edged chances but they regained their composure as scores from John Ryan and Conor Cronin restored the nine point lead. Dromtariffe’s endeavours were rewarded late in the day when being awarded the second penalty of the hour but this time the kick was dispersed expertly to the corner of the net with what proved to be the final score of the contest.

Congratulations to Bart Daly who lined out at centre half back on the Cork under 21 football team that defeated Waterford by 0-19 to 0-9 in the Munster championship semi final at Pairc Ui Rinn on Saturday and best wishes to him as they play Tipperary in the Munster Final at Thurles on Saturday.

Defending champions Newmarket began the defence of their Duhallow under 21 football championship with a fine victory away to Knocknagree on Sunday, a game in which they finished victorious by 1-11 to 0-6, on a fine afternoon for football.

Newmarket got off to a flying start when the upended John Lane stepped up and converted an early free. Early exchanges were tight and the home side levelled the contest on scoring a tenth minute free. Newmarket edged in front when John Ryan kicked a fine effort between the posts but a determined Knocknagree regained parity by the thirteenth minute. Once more Newmarket took the lead, this time the impressive Jerry McCarthy was on hand to clip the ball over the bar. Newmarket gained the initiative at this stage and a brace of points from John Lane and another from John Ryan confirmed their productive spell as they gained a 0-6 to 0-2 advantage by the twentieth minute. Knocknagree pointed next but Kevin O’Sullivan powered forward to kick his sides seventh point. Newmarket ended the half with a five point advantage, 0-8 to 0-3, as John Ryan kicked another good score in the dying moments of the half.

Newmarket increased their lead with Kevin O’Sullivan striding forward to kick a fine point from play in the third minute. Knocknagree added their first point of the half but this was answered by Newmarket when once more, Kevin O’Sullivan was on hand to kick another excellent point. As the game entered the final twelve minutes John Lane gave Newmarket a seven point cushion before the decisive score of the game came with nine minutes to play. A probing ball kicked into the edge of the square by Nicky Flanagan once again found Kevin O’Sullivan in the right position and he was on hand to aid the ball to the back of the Knocknagree net. The home side finished with the final two points of the hour but Newmarket ran out deserving winners.

Newmarket will look back on a number of fine individual performances. Michael O’Leary was outstanding in defence, with Brendan Stack an excellent sweeper while Conor Cronin and team captain Brian O’Riordan were also prominent. Kevin O’Sullivan had a huge role to play at midfield ably assisted by Bart Daly while in attack; John Ryan, Jerry McCarthy and John Lane were very effective.

Newmarket retained the Duhallow U-21 A Football Championship on Saturday last against Kanturk on a score line of 0-12 to 1-5. The reply, which was played a full seven months after the drawn final, was on in a perfect Rockchapel field. Newmarket have completed a two in a row now having won it last year against Boherbue, again after a replay. This is the eight U-21 title for the club.

The ball was thrown in at 2pm and within a minute Kanturk took the lead which incidentally enough was the only time they would lead throughout the game. Newmarket struck back with a placed ball five minutes later through the in form John Ryan. Newmarket took the lead for the first time through another John Ryan free on eight minutes. Newmarket began to take control as they kept Kanturk at bay with Michael Kenneally playing very well in the half back line and Kevin O’ Sullivan playing a big part at midfield. John Ryan once more pointed from a free after ten minutes.

After fifteen minutes John Ryan hit his first point from play to extend the lead to three points at the quarter mark. Once again Ryan hit a glorious long range free from forty yards to bisect the posts and put Newmarket four up. Kanturk replied a minute later when they converted a close in free. Newmarket replied through another Ryan free. Then Kevin O’ Sullivan, who had a magnificent game in the middle of the park, fielded the resulting kick out and soloed towards the left corner forward position, turned his man, and struck a huge point from thirty five yards to put Newmarket five points up. Kanturk had the final say in the first half when they pointed on twenty eight minutes to leave the score line 0-7 to 0-3 at the short whistle.

The second half began as the first half did with Kanturk instantly pointing from a difficult angle this time. Newmarket did once again strike back through T.J. Bodie who put over his first of the day with a good point off his left after a super run in which Michael Kenneally ran sixty yards with the ball in hand before he laid it off. John Ryan pointed again a minute later to give Newmarket a five point lead.

Immediately after this Kanturk hit Newmarket with the games only goal after a long ball in from a sideline kick, the ball broke to a Kanturk man who couldn’t miss to put only two points between the sides. The game was in the balance for a period while both sides contested well at midfield. With Conor Cronin, Brendan Stack and Paul Cashman coming into the game more and more as it went on Newmarket looked hard to break down in defence. Newmarket pointed on the three quarter mark again through T.J. Bodie to hold a three point advantage. John Ryan put Newmarket four ahead with another free. Kanturk had their final point of the game with five minutes to go. Newmarket had the final say though, when Robert Stack kicked a fine long range point to finish off the scoring for the day and leave the score line at 0-12 to 1-5.

Celebrations followed at the final whistle as Newmarket capped off a fine year in style with the divisional cup spending another year in town. The team which reached the county final earlier in the year and put on a spirited performance against the Barrs were well deserving of the win.

It was a fine performance from the team and the defence in particular as a unit were excellent. Niall O’ Connor made a couple of crucial saves and was in great form on the day. The full back line of Brendan Stack, Brian O’ Riordan and Robert Stack were in mighty form. The half back line played a huge part in the final with Paul Cashman, Conor Cronin and Michael Kenneally inspirational throughout and in the second half particularly. Kevin O’ Sullivan and Bart Daly were very good together at midfield. The forwards all had a part to play and John Ryan had a fine day at wing forward with eight points, six from placed balls. Of the 12 points Newmarket kicked 11 were off the left boots.

Niall O’ Connor, the stand in captain for the day as captain all year Timothy Murphy was unable to play, lifted the Connie O’ Sullivan cup for the eight time in Newmarket’s history to a rapturous applause.

Congratulations are extended to this great bunch of players who have given the club so many memorable days out over the years. Also a special thanks to the teams mentors Paul Murphy, Pat Flanagan, Pat O’ Brian and Benny O’ Keeffe who put in a lot of their free time to this team. The team was paraded through the town by the Newmarket Pipe Band who on such short notice always turns out for the G.A.A. and this is greatly appreciated.

The team on the day was…

St. Finbarr’s defeated a gallant and spirited Newmarket side in the Evening Echo County Under 21 football final at Pairc Ui Rinn on Sunday night by 1-14 to 1-8.

Newmarket, buoyed on by their terrific supporters settled early with the excellent John Lane converting a second minute free. Within a minute, St. Finbarr’s gained parity and hit the front for the first time in their next attack. John Lane slotted over a second free to tie the sides for a second time in the sixth minute. St. Finbarr’s who possessed superior physical strength throughout the field began to dominate but missed a string of chances. Newmarket burst forward with purpose and looked dangerous when given the opportunity and in the sixteenth minute, Ian Flanagan was on hand to slot over a third point after some superb approach play involving Bart Daly and Timothy Murphy. The sides were level for a third time when the city side pointed in the twenty second minute and they began to turn the screw for the remainder of the half as they converted three frees in succession to turn over in front by 0-6 to 0-3 at the interval.

Newmarket resumed in impressive fashion. John Lane breached the St. Finbarr’s rearguard to fist a point within a minute and the same player converted a free from a difficult angle three minutes later. Newmarket maintained their period of dominance and another excellent move ended with team captain Timothy Murphy left bearing down on goal and he was upended for a penalty. Brian O’Riordan, not for the first time, stepped up from the full back position and crashed the ball to the back of the net as Newmarket regained the lead, 1-5 to 0-6, six minutes into the half. The city champions responded and two successive points had the sides level for a fourth time with twenty minutes to play.

By the end of the third quarter they moved into a two point lead but John Ryan reduced the arrears to a minimum by pointing a free in the forty eighth minute. The powerful St. Finbarr’s made their dominance pay and in a three minute spell they sealed the contest. Two points were added to their tally before an all important individual goal arrived with eight minutes remaining and a six point advantage was established. Newmarket maintained their composure and once more John Lane found the target. St. Finbarr’s rallied with two points but the final score of the game came courtesy of Nicky Flanagan who drilled a point over the bar from twenty yards.

Newmarket and their team of mentors can reflect on a commendable performance on such an illustrious stage and can hopefully build on their notable achievements to date.

This particular panel of players have excelled down through the years and provided the club with many memorable occasions. They eventually made the breakthrough at under 16 level in Duhallow four years ago and in fact were pitted against St. Finbarrs in the county championship where the city side emerged victorious.

At minor level Newmarket enjoyed considerable success with the bulk of these players winning three successive Duhallow football championships between 2004/06 and completing a league and championship double in the latter two years.

In 2005 this current side progressed to the county final in both the championship and league. After claiming the Duhallow championship against Clara by 2-6 to 0-8, they progressed in the county championship on defeating Tracton, 1-11 to 1-5 and in the semi final, Fermoy were defeated by 2-13 to 1-9. On December 11th in the County Final at Ovens, Bandon ran out convincing winners by 4-9 to 0-4.
