Newmarket were first to score with Paul Verling converting a long range free in the opening minute. Kilbrin were level within a minute before they added two further points by the seventh minute. Paul Verling was again on target with a well converted twelfth minute free as Newmarket cut the deficit to a point. Kilbrin were guilty of hitting a succession of wides during the first half but they still scored heavily. They had the next two points but Paul Verling kept Newmarket in touch with another brace of points to leave to score at 0-5 to 0-4 after twenty minutes. Kilbrin found a way past Newmarket’s excellent goalkeeper Shane McAuliffe, for the first time with a twenty third minute goal and they gathered momentum to add a further two points. A second goal followed as the half came to a conclusion and a Michael Kenneally point was Newmarket’s solitary reply in between another pair of Kilbrin points which gave them a commanding advantage of 2-9 to 0-5 at half time.

Kilbrin assumed further control on adding three points after the restart before the industrious and hard working Eddie Allen pointed for Newmarket. Kilbrin pointed again before Newmarket’s endeavour was rewarded with Robert Stack on hand to finish to the net from close range following a goalmouth scramble which resulted from a free which dropped close to goal. Kilbrin closed out victory on adding three points before the conclusion with Robert Stack on target with a point for Newmarket.

The Kilbrin onslaught began from the outset with the first point arriving in the second minute. By the tenth minute Kilbrin had five points on the board before John Lane got Newmarket off the mark with a pointed free in the tenth minute. Kilbrin added a point before striking for a goal midway through the half by which stage the outcome began to look ominous. Three further points followed before John Lane had Newmarket’s second score of the half. Newmarket failed to make any impact as Kilbrin blitzed their opponents with some sparkling scores. John Ryan added a further Newmarket point before the interval but a rampant Kilbrin turned over in front by a whopping 1-17 to 0-3.

Kilbrin added to their big tally within a minute of the restart before Newmarket’s talisman John Lane added two points. Kilbrin replied with four more unanswered points and were it not for the outstanding form of Newmarket goalkeeper Shane McAuliffe throughout and at times some wayward shooting the outcome could have been even worse. John Lane added to his tally before a brief respite arrived midway through the half when Michael Kenneally got a finishing touch to a John Lane delivery for a Newmarket goal. The sides shared the next four points with John Lane on target with another brace of points. Newmarket maintained an improved effort with three more points before the finish with John Lane twice either side of a superb individual point from Colin O’Sullivan proving scant consolation of a very disappointing evening for the club.

Kilbrin raced into an early lead with two points by the fourth minute before John Ryan got Newmarket on the scoreboard with a well converted long range free. Kilbrin added a brace of points before John Ryan once more was on target from a placed ball. In the tenth minute Colin O’Sullivan slotted over a third Newmarket point but in a flash Kilbrin added to their tally at the other end.

The game flowed with pace from end to end as a highly entertaining game developed. Newmarket’s outstanding performer, Kevin O’Sullivan cut the deficit to a point again on striking a long range point but the visitors responded with a point in their next attack.

Newmarket grew in confidence and this was reflected with points from John Ryan and a fine long range point from Barry O’Leary which tied the sides for the first time at 0-6 apiece in the sixteenth minute. The high scoring rate continued with the sides swapping points as Shane Murphy levelled the game for the second time in the twentieth minute. Newmarket took the lead for the first time thanks to Kevin O’Sullivan but this lasted only moments as Kilbrin replied with a levelling score. The impressive John Ryan displayed his accuracy with two further points but on each occasion Kilbrin answered and as an excellent half of hurling concluded the sides turned over deadlocked at 0-10 apiece having been level on five different occasions during the second quarter.

The second half resumed in similar vein, with Kilbrin edging in front but Shane Murphy struck a fine equalizer from distance for Newmarket. Four minutes into the half Kilbrin found a way through the Newmarket rearguard and a clinical finish provided the first goal of the game. Kilbrin grew in stature and Newmarket struggled at this stage to add to their tally despite their valiant efforts. Kilbrin added three points and by the three quarter stage, they enjoyed a six point advantage, 1-14 to 0-11. Points from John Ryan and Kevin O’Sullivan brought Newmarket to within four points as the game entered the final ten minutes but crucially the next score was a decisive second Kilbrin goal as they took a significant lead. Newmarket did create a couple of clear cut goal scoring chances, one in each half but unfortunately were unable to avail of either. John Ryan had Newmarket’s final score of the game as Kilbrin added three of the last four points of the contest to claim victory.

Newmarket were first on the scoreboard when Luke McCarthy slotted over a free in the sixth minute with Kilbrin gaining parity four minutes later through similar means.

The industrious Ian Flanagan edged Newmarket in front again before Kilbrin struck for a goal in the fifteenth minute after a quickly taken free reaped its rewards. Kilbrin put a clear goal between the sides with a point in the twenty second minute.

Newmarket werewell marshalled in the full back line with Paudie Allen particularly outstanding throughout the game. Newmarket gained momentum at this stage and Patrick Kelly pointed before Ian Flanagan landed a glorious score from distance. The sides exchanged points with Ian Flanagan again on target before Kilbrin ended the scoring for the half to go into the interval with a lead of 1-4 to 0-5.

The second half resumed with Kilbrin increasing their advantage with a pointimmediately upon the restart. Luke McCarthy cut the deficit on converting a free two minutes later. Kilbrin doubled their advantage with successive points but Newmarket had the next score with a well taken point from Bryan O’Connell. The sides then swapped points with the impressive Gavin Forde on target for Newmarket.

As the game entered the final ten minutes critically, Kilbrin struck for a well executed second goal and put a clear six points between the sides. Newmarket to their credit refused to relent. Ian Flanagan strode forward with purpose throughout and kicked over his fourth point of the evening.

Eddie Allen kicked two fine scores either side of a Kilbrin point as Newmarket kept on pressing, but eventually time ran out and Newmarket now enter the draw for round two.

Michael Kenneally added a fourth point for Newmarket but two more points gave Kilbrin an interval advantage of 1-12 to 0-4.

The sides traded points in the first ten minutes of the second half with Donnacha O’Dea on target for Newmarket. The gap between the sides grew courtesy of three points before the second Kilbrin goal of the night. Newmarket got off to a good start when the outstanding Kevin O’Sullivan converted a free from distance in the third minute. A Kilbrin point levelled the scores for the first time in the eighth minute and the sides shared the next two points with Kevin O’Sullivan again on target from a long range dead ball. Newmarket grew in confidence and points followed from John Lane, Kevin O’Sullivan and a fine solo effort from Tony O’Keeffe to leave the score at 0-5 to 0-2 after fifteen minutes.

Kilbrin hit back with an equalizing goal in the eighteenth minute and in a free flowing contest the sides again exchanged the next brace of points, with the excellent Michael Kenneally on target for Newmarket. Kilbrin gained a slender lead on getting the next point but in keeping with the trend of the half the lead would change hands on another two occasions, before the end of the half. John Lane and Tony O’Keeffe edged Newmarket in front but two Kilbrin points, the first which saw the sides level for the sixth time in the half, left the half time score at 1-6 to 0-8 in the home sides favour.

Kilbrin raced into a three point lead on adding two points within three minutes of the restart. Newmarket pointed next with a fine point from Michael Kenneally but two further Kilbrin points saw them gain a four point advantage. Barry O’Leary found the target with another fine effort but once more Kilbrin answered with a point. Newmarket’s challenge was boosted considerably when Michael Kenneally raced in on goal and produced a fine finish to the net after some fine approach play, to leave the game nicely poised at 1-11 to 1-10.

However, Kilbrin proved more clinical and they had the next three points. John Lane pointed a free for Newmarket as the game entered the closing ten minutes but once again Kilbrin pointed next to restore a four point lead. A resilient Newmarket were rewarded for their endeavours when despite going close to scoring a goal on several occasions throughout and being denied by some excellent Kilbrin goalkeeping, they found the net for a second time when Kieran Lehane met a long delivery from John Lane to flick the ball home. Within a minute, John Lane slotted over a free and once more the sides were level, 1-15 to 2-12 with just five minutes remaining. The home side hit back with a point and clinched victory with a decisive second goal in the closing minutes to finally put paid to Newmarket in a very entertaining contest.

Newmarket gained parity in an entertaining game through points from Donnacha O’Dea and Shane Murphy but Kilbrin regained the lead with two further points. The next six points were divided as Shane Murphy twice and Donnacha O’Dea were on target for Newmarket. The home side gained the upper hand when awarded a penalty and the upended Shane Murphy stood up to convert for a Newmarket goal. Two further points were divided as Bryan O’Connell ensured Newmarket enjoyed a slender advantage at the turnover, 1-8 to 0-10.

Kilbrin tied proceedings five minutes after the restart but two points from the prolific Shane Murphy and another from Seán Irwin gave Newmarket a three point advantage. Kilbrin gained terms again by adding the next three points and the sides remained deadlocked after sharing two points with Donnacha O’Dea adding his third of the evening. Newmarket gained momentum and were rewarded on points from Robert Stack and two fine scores from substitute Liam Murphy. A resolute defence with Brendan Stack, John McSweeney, Billy Daly and Donnacha Fitzpatrick impressive throughout, were dealt a blow right at the death when Kilbrin found the net from a free despite a mass of Newmarket player lining the goals and they had to settle for a share of the points.

Kilbrin resumed strongly and had three points on the board within six minutes. Newmarket had the best possible response when the industrious Robert Stack created an opening and Shane Murphy found the net from close range. The sides exchanged points with Conor Cronin pointing from distance as Newmarket held a lead of 1-13 to 1-7 at the three quarter mark. Crucially, the next score went to Kilbrin courtesy of their second goal and this buoyed on their efforts as two quickfire points left just a solitary point the margin with ten minutes to play. Newmarket recovered and John Lane scored but this was answered by a Kilbrin score. As the game entered the dying moments Kilbrin struck for a third goal and despite a John Lane point with the last puck of the game, Kilbrin emerged with the spoils.

Kilbrin responded briskly and quickly attained level terms for the first time after three successive points. John Lane edged Newmarket in front but Kilbrin tied the game again at 0-5 apiece. An even contest developed with the sides exchanging four further points, Kevin O’Sullivan and Denys O’Brien edging Newmarket ahead on both occasions. A confident Newmarket side turned over in front thanks to another point from the influential Denys O’Brien and a fine team effort yielded a 0-8 to 0-7 advantage at this stage.

Newmarket resumed in similarly impressive fashion with Kevin O’Sullivan converting a free and the ever industrious Robert Stack rounding off one of Newmarket’s fine flowing movements with another point. Kilbrin pointed next but Newmarket responded instantly when the impressive Tony O’Keeffe restored a three point lead. Kilbrin, however came back in brisk fashion and three points in as many minutes had the sides level for the fifth time at 0-11 apiece after forty one minutes. A resilient Newmarket came back again and Tony O’Keeffe finished a free flowing move by pointing but Kilbrin hit two points as the lead changed hands. In keeping with the nature of the game Newmarket replied in similar fashion thanks to two more Kevin O’Sullivan frees to lead by 0-14 to 0-13 with thirteen minutes remaining. Kilbrin hit back yet again and three points gave them their biggest advantage of the hour as they led by two points, seven minutes from time.

Newmarket dug deep for the remainder of the contest, Kevin O’Sullivan halving the deficit three minutes from time before regaining parity in the closing minute. Newmarket to their credit maintained their hunger to finish even stronger and were rewarded when Maurice Feehan landed a memorable point from distance. They were awarded a seventy deep into injury time and this resulted in the final piece of action and Newmarket heralded a super result.

It was a huge result for the team, eventually making a championship breakthrough having come so close in recent years, especially last year having drawn with Freemount and Banteer. A terrific effort saw a number of notable excellent individual performances. Team captain Pa O’Brien led by example at corner back as the six backs all gave memorable displays, Kevin O’Sullivan’s scoring and general play was immense while Denys O’Brien and Tony O’Keeffe threatened throughout in attack.

Newmarket’s response was instant upon the restart when Maurice Feehan found the net for an equalizing goal. Little separated the sides as they exchanged six points in the next ten minutes, Denys O’Brien finding the target for Newmarket on each occasion with a fine array of scores from dead balls and play. Kilbrin then gained supremacy on scoring four unanswered points but Newmarket were once more in contention when Denys O’Brien found the net from a free, leaving just a solitary point between the sides, 2-13 to 3-9 with twelve minutes left to play. Kilbrin added three further points before Kevin O’Sullivan brought the arrears to three points. Critically at this stage Kilbrin scored their third goal of the contest and also added a point. As in the first half, Kilbrin resumed with a point before Ian Flanagan responded with another for Newmarket. Kilbrin got back on level terms by scoring the next two points and they then regained the lead with their third point in succession. Newmarket tied the contest again at 2-7 to 0-13 when Shane Murphy scored a fine point at the end of the third quarter. Newmarket took the lead with Denys O’Brien converting a sixty five metre free with Donnacha Fitzparick, who had a fine game at full forward, pointed with from a ground stroke. Another Kilbrin point meant just a solitary point separated the sides with little over five minutes remaining. Newmarket finished strongly and a fine team effort was rewarded with scores from Ian Flanagan, Denys O’Brien and Shane Murphy and they went on to claim a fine victory.

Bouyed on by this and despite a Kilbrin point, a fine piece of play involving Anthony Crowley and Donnacha O’Dea ended with Michael Kenneally making a superb catch and crashing the ball to the back of the net for a second goal. A Shane Anthony Murphy point left just the minimum of margins between the sides again. A couple of Kilbrin points left them in front by 2-12 to 2-9 at the end of the third quarter.

Kilbrin added two points but Newmarket hurling well and inspired by the efforts of John McSweeney, Pa O’Brien, Anthony Crowley, Kieran Hayes and John Lane struck points from the latter and Michael Kenneally. This left the score reading 1-7 to 0-5 in Kilbrin’s favour at half time.

Kilbrin pointed first after the restart but Newmarket hit back with points from John Lane and Donnacha O’Dea.The sides then exchanged four points with impressive substitute Gerard Sheahan on target twice, which left the score 1-10 to 0-9 with twelve minutes remaining. Kilbrin finished strongly scoring three points before a goal in the final minute completed their victory.

Newmarket hurled very well with Pa O’Brien and Anthony Crowley again prominent in the second half.
