Newmarket’s footballers bowed out of the Evening Echo Premier Intermediate Football Championship with a third round defeat to Glenville by 1-11 to 1-8 at Mourne Abbey on Friday night. They now face the prospect of a relegation playoff match against Glanmire which Newmarket must win in order to retain their premier status.

Glenville opened the scoring with a second minute point but it was Newmarket who dominated the early stages. John Lane kicked a fine equalizing point from a tight angle in the fourth minute and moments later the same player collected a long delivery from Denys O’Brien before off loading to the on rushing Mark Reidy who found himself bearing down on goal and he crashed the ball to the back of the net with an excellent finish. John Ryan pointed superbly from play and when Bart Daly converted a long range free, Newmarket had 1-3 on the board by the seventh minute. Glenville recovered and in the twelfth minute they scored the first of four points in succession. Mark Reidy pointed next for Newmarket but Glenville remained in the ascendancy and two further points had the sides’ level with three minutes of the half remaining. As the half entered the final stages T.J. Bodie gave Newmarket a slender advantage with a well taken point and they turned over in front by 0-8 to 1-4.

Glenville restored parity within a minute of the restart but John Ryan edged Newmarket in front again with a second minute free. The game swung in Glenville’s favour a minute later when they breached the Newmarket rearguard to score a decisive goal. Glenville increased their advantage to three points in the eighth minute of the half. There followed a thirteen minute scoreless period as Newmarket struggled to make inroads on the scoreboard. As the game entered the final ten minutes, Tony O’Keeffe instinctively fisted a ball dropping into the Glenville square narrowly over the bar and this represented Newmarket’s closest chance to reviving their challenge. As Newmarket failed to muster much needed scores, Glenville closed out the victory on adding two insurance points.

Newmarket had the final score of the game as the impressive John Ryan slotted over a consolation point but they had to endure the disappointment of defeat once more in the championship and the ominous prospect of relegation in their next outing.

Newmarket endured a frustrating defeat against Clyda Rovers in the second round of the Evening Echo Premier Intermediate Football Championship played in splendid sunshine at picturesque Banteer on Saturday evening with the North Cork side advancing on a scoreline of 0-14 to 1-8.

After an initial scrappy opening to the game, John Ryan illuminated proceeding on converting a superb free from a narrow angle in the third minute. Clyda Rovers tied the scores for the first time with a fifth minute point from a free and their next two points came in similar fashion by the tenth minute. In the eleventh minute, Newmarket corner back Kevin O’Connor burst out from defence and set off on a rampaging run through the field where he exchanged passes with David O’Flynn who ultimately kicked a fine point from distance. Clyda added the next score but Newmarket, whose performance was riddled with unforced errors throughout, had their best period of the game.

The outstanding Bart Daly converted a free and kicked a superb point in the twenty second minute to gain parity once more and he was central to everything positive Newmarket had to contribute. As the half entered the closing minutes, Newmarket were punished for their sloppy play and indecisiveness as Clyda Rovers finished the half in the ascendancy as two points gave them an interval lead of 0-6 to 0-4.

Newmarket resumed in a positive nature and John Ryan slotted over a point within two minutes. It was Clyda however that gained the impetus and they crucially hit four points in a five minute spell to take a clear five point lead with ten minutes of the half elapsed.

Newmarket struggled to find a way through the Clyda rearguard but a John Ryan free brought about a change in fortune. As the game entered the final quarter, a quickly taken free from the astute Denys O’Brien picked out John Lane in clear space and as he closed in on goal he selflessly offloaded the ball to Mark Reidy who kept his composure to slot a neat finish to the back of the net, for the games only goal. This brought Newmarket to within a point of their opponents and the sides exchanged the next two points with John Ryan kicking a memorable score for Newmarket. With the game nicely poised, Newmarket self destructed and once more presented Clyda with points through their own unforced errors and they availed by scoring three points to put a clear four points difference between the sides.

Newmarket battled to the end and John Lane reduced the arrears on pointing a free. They came very close to salvaging a draw late on but Clyda held firm to advance to round four.

Newmarket must now play Clyda Rovers in the second round of the Evening Echo Premier Intermediate football championship, following their narrow defeat to near neighbours Kiskeam by 1-9 to 0-11, in a closely contested first round game played in perfect conditions at Kanturk on Sunday.

Both sides struggled to settle into the game before the first score of the game went to Kiskeam in the ninth minute. Newmarket responded instantly when Seanie Francis O’Connor pointed from play. Newmarket goalkeeper, Niall O’Connor impressive throughout, had to be at his best in the thirteenth minute on producing a memorable save from close range but the first twenty minutes of the game were rather dour and forgettable. Kiskeam opened a two point lead on scoring twice in as many minutes before Newmarket were rewarded for a fine flowing move with David O’Flynn punching a point. Kiskeam increased their advantage on adding two further points but Newmarket ended the half with another slick passing move which left Seanie Francis O’Connor through the rearguard to point and leave the score at 0-5 to 0-3 at the halfway point.

Kiskeam resumed with a point within two minutes but T.J. Bodie replied for Newmarket after yet another well worked team score. David O’Flynn reduced the gap to a solitary point but in their next foray into the Newmarket half, Kiskeam found the net with a well worked individual goal for what proved to be the crucial score of the game. Newmarket needed a response and this duly came about. Mark Reidy pointed on being well picked out by a Kevin O’Sullivan pass, with Tony O’Keeffe then clipping over a point from close range.

As Newmarket kept up the momentum a T.J. Bodie point left the score reading 1-6 to 0-8 with thirteen minutes remaining. However, Newmarket ultimately failed to gain level terms despite a concerted effort. Denys O’Brien was immense throughout at midfield, with Kevin O’Connor outstanding in defence as they inspired their team mates but unfortunately Newmarket fell short of gaining parity on several occasions. Kiskeam added two points to restore a three point lead, but true to form Newmarket came back to within a point thanks to points from John Ryan and Seanie Francis O’Connor as the game entered the closing minutes. Once more Kiskeam edged ahead by two points before Bart Daly kicked a superb deadball from distance for a Newmarket point. Newmarket tried in vain to take the contest to extra time but just fell short on the day and must now regroup for round two next month.

Newmarket completed preparations for next Sunday’s Premier Intermediate football championship game against Kiskeam (in Kanturk at 4pm) with a hard fought home league victory over Grenagh by 1-15 to 1-13 at Newmarket on Sunday evening.

Newmarket got off to a blistering start and within seconds had two points on the board thanks to Mark Reidy and David O’Flynn. They maintained the better of proceedings in the opening segment with Denys O’Brien kicking a sublime pass onto Seanie Francis O’Connor and he applied a terrific finish for a third point. In the ninth minute, full forward John Lane took advantage of some indecision in the Grenagh defence to snap the ball and tuck it into the back of the net for a six point lead. Grenagh eventually forged themselves into the contest and added three points by the fifteenth minute. Newmarket gained momentum again with T.J. Bodie applying a neat finish to a fine team move before the same player chipped in with two further points. Newmarket, with Kevin O’Connor and John Ryan to the fore in defence, enhanced their position further through points from Denys O’Brien and T.J. Bodie. Grenagh had the final score of the half but Newmarket ended a satisfactory thirty minutes in the lead by 1-8 to 0-4.

Grenagh made their intentions clear for the second half as they cut the deficit by two points within five minutes. Newmarket settled upon John Lane converting a free but Grenagh added two more points in response. A point from Maurice Feehan gave Newmarket a lead of 1-10 to 0-8 at the three quarter stage. Grenagh kept plugging away and clipping at the Newmarket lead and two more points brought the arrears to a clear goal. Newmarket, driven on by the superb Barry O’Leary, regrouped, with David O’Flynn kicking a memorable point before John Lane found the target from a free. However, the issue was always in the balance and never more so than in the final five minutes when Grenagh struck for a goal and quickfire point to leave the score at 1-12 to 1-11 and on edge. Once more Newmarket found the reserve to kick on and despite John Lane having a point answered with a Grenagh score, Newmarket swept forward again with Denys O’Brien and T.J. Bodie adding two superbly executed points for a three point lead. Grenagh had a close in free at the death to try and retrieve an equalizing goal but the ball blazed over the bar and Newmarket held on for victory.

A grandstand finish, which crucially yielded two goals and a point enabled Newmarket to record a fine league win away to Glanmire on Friday evening last with the game ending 2-14 to 0-13 after an open entertaining contest.

Glanmire opened the scoring within a minute with Nicky Flanagan kicking a fine long range point for Newmarket in the fourth minute, before having to retire injured from the play. Glanmire edged in front for a second time before the impressive T.J. Bodie scored another fine effort from distance. The sides exchanged four further points in the first quarter with another brace of quality scores from play for Newmarket coming courtesy of fine finishing from Mark Reidy and Denys O’Brien. Both defences coped better at this stage but Newmarket looked very threatening on the offensive throughout. T. J. Bodie gave Newmarket the lead after twenty four minutes but a Glanmire point, tied the scores for the fifth time in a very close half’s play which ended 0-5 apiece.

Newmarket resumed in devastating fashion and the lethal finishing of T.J. Bodie complemented some excellent approach play as four points from the Newmarket marksman came in a six minute spell. John Ryan finished neatly in the next minute and suddenly Newmarket enjoyed a five point advantage. Glanmire recovered and they replied impressively, slowly reducing the lead and amazingly as it transpired they went on to score the next five points to tie the sides again at 0-10 apiece, fifteen minutes into the half.

Newmarket showed great character and seized the initiative again with points following from Maurice Feehan, a sublime effort from Kevin O’Sullivan and T.J. Bodie as Newmarket enjoyed a three point advantage entering the final ten minutes.

However, keeping with the context of the game, Glanmire hit back again and by scoring the next three points, the sides were level for the seventh time over the hour. Once again, Newmarket showed great resolve and led on by the prominent displays of Barry O’Leary, Denys O’Brien and Mark Reidy, their efforts inspired their team-mates to a late push for victory. Fittingly, Denys O’Brien fisted a monstrous punched pass over the home defence which found Mark Reidy all alone close to the Glanmire goal; as the on rushing goalkeeper tried to nullify the danger; the Newmarket centre forward coolly sidestepped his opponent to clip the ball home into an empty net.

A vibrant Newmarket side closed out the victory in fine style and Colin O’Sullivan followed with an excellently taken point before David O’Flynn finished proceedings by chipping in a second goal right at the death. The result gave Newmarket their third successive league victory.

Newmarket’s intermediate football team recorded their second successive league victory with a very comprehensive victory over Killavullen by 3-16 to 0-5 at Kilbrin on Saturday evening.

Newmarket laid down a marker from the very outset and John Lane had the first point on the board within a minute. John Ryan slotted over an excellently converted free in the fourth minute before John Lane added his second point. In the tenth minute Newmarket increased their advantage when John Lane raced through the Killavullen defence and crashed an unstoppable shot to the roof of the net. John Ryan added a point as Newmarket took a seven point lead before Killavullen got off the mark by scoring two points in succession.

Newmarket were further rewarded for their dominance on the scoreboard through points from Maurice Feehan, John Lane and John Ryan. As the half entered the closing minutes Mark Reidy placed a superb pass into the path of Tony O’Keeffe who turned in and raced towards goal before planting the ball to the net for a second and decisive Newmarket goal. John Ryan completed the scoring for the half with a free and Newmarket turned over with a big lead of 2-8 to 0-2.

After the restart Newmarket full forward T.J. Bodie produced the goods and hit over three well taken points in seven minutes with Killavullen also on target in this period of play. Newmarket, playing with confidence that was evident from their football produced a number of fine moves and were further rewarded with points from Seanie Francis O’Connor twice and Mark Reidy which built up a lead of 2-14 to 0-3 by the end of the third quarter. Tony O’Keeffe and Maurice Feehan also found the target before Tony O’Keeffe found the net for a second time when punching a dropping ball home from the edge of the square for a third goal. Killavullen rallied and Newmarket goalkeeper Niall O’Connor produced a few fine saves during the half before they finished the game with the final two points. However, Newmarket will reflect on a very satisfactory display from both the starting fifteen and five subs introduced.

The Intermediate’s won their first league game of the season on Sunday last when they recorded a comprehensive victory over Adrigole in ideal conditions in Newmarket on a scoreline of 3-12 to 0-8 points.

Adrigole started the game by pointing within a minute. John Ryan got Newmarket’s first point of the day from a placed ball four minutes later but Adrigole replied swiftly to take the lead again. Once more a John Ryan placed ball meant parity between the sides after 11 minutes. Adrigole for the third time took the advantage and Mark Reidy replied to level scores for the third and last time in the match. John Lane gave Newmarket the lead for the first time in the game and they never looked back. A good point from Tony O’ Keeffe and another point to the very impressive Mark Reidy put Newmarket 6 points to 3 ahead at the 20 minute mark. The game was finished in reality when Maurice Feehan goaled after some very good build up play and a quickfire second from Tony O’ Keeffe after a sublime pass from John Ryan to leave it 2-6 to 3 after 25 minutes. John Lane pointed but Adrigole had the final say of the half to leave it 2-7 to 0-4 at the halfway mark.

Adrigole pointed 3 mintes into the second half but immediately Mark Reidy replied with a goal. Again Adrigole pointed and John Ryan replied with a placed ball to make it 3-8 to 0-5 after 40 minutes. Adrigole pointed once more but Newmarket followed with a purple patch with points to John Lane, Tony O’ Keeffe, and Shane Murphy and after a patient build up a Mark Reidy point made it 3-11 to 0-6 with 10minutes to go. Adrigole got the final 2 points of the game and it finished up 3-12 to 8 points.

Newmarket can be pleased with the victory and there was some very good individual performances. The back line was solid throughout with Brian O’ Riordan and Barry O’ Leary prominent.

Newmarket suffered a second successive league defeat in the intermediate football league, when despite an encouraging display, the home side Nemo Rangers emerged victorious by 1-12 to 0-10 in a game played on Sunday afternoon.

Nemo got off the mark when they pointed within seconds of the throw in but it was Newmarket who settled the better and they gained parity when the outstanding T.J. Bodie slotted over an equalizing free in the second minute. Tony O’Keeffe slipped through the Nemo rearguard two minutes later to punch a point before T.J. Bodie added a third point in the ninth minute. Newmarket continued to impress and with Mark Reidy to the fore in attack and the clinical T.J. Bodie on target with a further two efforts as Newmarket led 0-5 to 0-1 at the end of the opening quarter. Nemo responded and in the space of three minutes added three quickfire points. John Lane converted a free for Newmarket but Nemo finished the half by gaining parity at 0-6 apiece thanks to two points in succession.

Similar to the first half, Nemo pointed within seconds and went on to add another two points in the opening minutes. To their credit, Newmarket responded in fine fashion and some excellent approach play resulted with points from Maurice Feehan, T.J. Bodie and John Lane which tied the sides for a third time, ten minutes into the second half.

The turning point of the contest came a minute later when Nemo broke through the Newmarket defence and found the net past Newmarket’s excellent goalkeeper, Niall O’Connor. They added to this crucial score by adding three more points and Newmarket struggled to respond. Substitute Nicky Flanagan did add a point for Newmarket but it was the home side that emerged victors by five points.

Newmarket, playing with the assistance of the breeze in the first half got off to a blistering start when they split open the home defence and centre half forward, Mark Reidy pointed within thirty seconds. Newmarket continued to impress in the early exchanges and another neat passage of play resulted with John Lane kicking over a fine point in the second minute. Bart Daly increased the advantage when he expertly converted a forty five in the fifth minute and in the ninth minute another well worked move resulted in T.J. Bodie slotting over a fourth point.

Kildorrery had been wasteful early on but two quickfire points brought them right back into contention by the end of the opening quarter. The sides went on to exchange points with John Lane first off the mark for Newmarket in the eighteenth minute. Newmarket were grateful to their outstanding goalkeeper, Niall O’Connor who was superlative throughout and in the space of six minutes he pulled off two incredible stops. During this period, Newmarket added two points thanks to Seanie Francis O’Connor and John Lane. The half ended with a Kildorrery point as Newmarket turned around at the interval in front by 0-7 to 0-4.

Newmarket faced a battle in the second half against the strong breeze and two points within a minute cut the deficit to just a solitary point within six minutes. Newmarket had their first point of the half in the tenth minute when T.J. Bodie clipped over a point from a tight angle. Kildorrery had the next point but another fine finish from T.J. Bodie restored a two point advantage for Newmarket at the end of the third quarter, however this proved to be Newmarket’s final score of the contest. The home side gradually assumed supremacy and as the game entered the final ten minutes, Newmarket’s lead was cut to a single point. Once more, Newmarket goalkeeper pulled off another incredible save but the home side tied the scores for the only time in the contest at 0-9 apiece with seven minutes remaining. Eventually they hit the front and as the game entered injury time they sealed the contest in the final segment of play.

Newmarket recovered from a nightmare start to produce a stunning display to defeat Millstreet by 4-20 to 2-2 in the opening round of the Duhallow Cup played at Millstreet on Friday evening.

John Lane had Newmarket in front thanks to a point in the opening minute but following some slack Newmarket defending, two goals in as many minutes turned matters firmly in Millstreet’s favour. The textbook deadball skills of Bart Daly, a feature throughout, reduced the arrears before John Ryan added a free. Brian O’Riordan attacked with menace throughout as Newmarket put together some excellent moves and he was on hand to kick a fine point in the ninth minute. Two minutes later another excellent move which spanned the length of the pitch ended with T.J. Bodie placing John Lane in on goal and he finished expertly to gain Newmarket the lead, 1-4 to 2-0. A free flowing Newmarket side added to their lead with an array of fine scores from Niall O’Connor, John Ryan, David O’Flynn and Tony O’Keeffe. Millstreet cut the deficit to three points on scoring a point but Tony O’Keeffe responded with a point for Newmarket. Newmarket ended the half with an excellent team goal when once more they put together a slick passing movement and David O’Flynn found himself bearing down on goal and he kept his composure to finish to the net in fine style which left Newmarket in command, 2-9 to 2-1 at half time.

The second half continued in the same vain for Newmarket. Bart Daly slotted over a free before Brian O’Riordan added his second point. Timothy Murphy was on hand to kick a fine team score before John Ryan added two superb efforts. Bart Daly added a further point before a Millstreet point left the score reading 2-15 to 2-2. Newmarket maintained their high standard as John Ryan, John Lane twice and Bart Daly reeled off further scores. As the game entered the final stages John Lane was on hand to convert two close in goals before a Bart Daly free brought an end to a memorable Newmarket display.

Newmarket were quick off the mark and their first attack yielded an excellent point from Tony O’Keeffe in the very first minute. Grenagh tied up matters in the seventh minute before some sloppy defending gifted Grenagh the games only goal a minute later. Grenagh increased their advantage by another point before Kevin O’Sullivan surged forward to kick Newmarket’s second score. The sides exchanged points as Tony O’Keeffe found the target for a second time. The next four points were shared as Bart Daly twice executed two superbly taken forty fives. A John Ryan point late in the half left Newmarket trailing by 1-5 to 0-6 at the turnover.

Grenagh dominated long periods of the second half and they added four unanswered points in the third quarter. Newmarket eventually pointed through a T.J. Bodie free Grenagh restored a six point lead before David O’Flynn scored a fine individual point for Newmarket. Two further points were shared before the finish as T.J. Bodie claimed the last score of the game but this game had all the hallmark of an end of season contest.

Newmarket emerged with the spoils following an entertaining Intermediate football league game at home to Ballinora on Saturday evening by 2-12 to 3-8.

Newmarket got off to the best possible start when a long delivery found John Lane closing in on goal in the opening passage of play but he was upended and from the resultant penalty Brian O’Riordan slotted the ball to the bottom corner of the net. John Ryan followed with a point before Ballinora registered their first point in the fifth minute. Newmarket impressed and team captain Tony O’Keeffe was next to point. Ballinora responded however and were on level terms at 1-2 apiece by the fourteenth minute.

Newmarket gained the impetus again and points followed from T.J. Bodie, John Ryan and Maurice Feehan before the highlight of the match in the twentieth minute. The outstanding Barry O’Leary burst out of defence on one of his several rampaging runs and set in motion a stunning movement of play which involved numerous players linking up at pace and ended with Colin O’Sullivan crashing to the net. Ballinora then had a point but Brian O’Riordan kicked a fine point to give Newmarket a six point advantage, 2-6 to 1-3 with five minutes remaining in the half. Ballinora finished the half strongly and a point was followed with a tonic goal in injury time as Newmarket went into the interval leading by 2-6 to 2-4.

Ballinora had the opening point of the second half before John Ryan converted a free for Newmarket in the fifth minute. A brace of points to the visitors had the sides level for a second time of a contest played at a fast pace and flowing from end to end. Tony O’Keeffe edged Newmarket in front again but Ballinora broke through for a third goal to take the lead for the first time at the end of the third quarter. John Ryan pointed for Newmarket as the sides exchanged points. As the game entered the final ten minutes Newmarket displayed great character and resolve throughout the field and finished in fine fashion. Nicky Flanagan and John Ryan gained parity before the industrious John Lane was rewarded for his endeavour by kicking the winning point from a free in the closing minutes and Newmarket clung on for an excellent win.

Newmarket’s intermediate football team preserved their Premier Intermediate status when a late flurry of scores including a match winning goal from team captain Tony O’Keeffe, enabled them to defeat a shell shocked Mayfield side by 1-9 to 0-9 in a poor relegation play off semi final played in perfect conditions at Ballyclough on Saturday evening.

The city side opened the scoring with a free in the fifth minute before Newmarket replied when Tony O’Keeffe cut through the Mayfield rearguard to kick a point. Mayfield restored their advantage in the eighth minute but Newmarket tilted the scales in their own favour thanks to two well finished scores from John Ryan and Bart Daly. Some fine individual approach play from John Lane enabled him to punch a point from a narrow angle to give Newmarket a two point lead. Mayfield responded with a point but T.J. Bodie pointed from distance for Newmarket. Both sides were guilty of basic errors and squandering excellent scoring opportunities throughout as a nervy encounter developed. It was Mayfield who finished the half the better and they scored three points in succession to turn over in front with a slender advantage, 0-6 to 0-5.

A scrappy second half followed where only three points were scored in the first twenty two minutes. John Ryan converted a free in the eighth minute and Maurice Feehan regained Newmarket the lead with a neatly taken point. At the end of the third quarter Mayfield scored their first point of the half and the sides were level for the fifth time during the hour at 0-7 each. With the game firmly in the balance and so much at stake both sides pressed to gain the upper hand.

Seven minutes from time Mayfield gained the upper hand with a pointed free and appeared to have gained a winning position when they doubled this lead with three minutes of normal time remaining. To their great credit, Newmarket dug really deep and showed exceptional character to completely turn the tables in unlikely circumstances. Bart Daly was central to this turnaround and he kicked a superb point to leave just a point between the sides. With the game well into injury time a long delivery into the edge of the square from Conor Cronin was well fielded by Kevin O’Sullivan and he laid the ball off to the on rushing Tony O’Keeffe who showed great composure and character to crash the ball to the back of the Mayfield net. Newmarket were buoyant and were very close to scoring a second goal before T.J. Bodie kicked an insurance point and Newmarket were relieved to hear the final whistle as their opponents had no time to respond to the late drama.

Newmarket’s intermediate footballers claimed their first league victory of the season when they recorded an impressive home victory over Glanmire by 3-13 to 1-10 on Monday evening last.

The visitors were quick of the mark pointing within seconds of the throw in. Newmarket tied proceedings with T.J. Bodie slotting over a fourth minute free before John Ryan kicked the home side in front four minutes later. The sides were tied for a second time in the eleventh minute and went on to exchange another brace of points, Denys O’Brien on the mark for Newmarket, as they squandered numerous scoring opportunities during the opening half. Timothy Murphy was upended in the Glanmire square following a defence splitting move and corner back, Brian O’Riordan stepped forward to slot the ball into the net for the games opening goal after twenty three minutes. Newmarket’s joy was short lived as the visitors struck for an equalizing goal within a minute. Newmarket went into the interval with a slender one point lead 1-4 to 1-3 thanks to T.J. Bodie pointing late into the half.

Upon the restart, John Lane scored his first point of the evening but Glanmire replied with a point instantly. In the sixth minute, Newmarket half back Mark Reidy found himself deep in Glanmire territory and he kept his composure to find the net at the second time of asking. This gave Newmarket the impetus to drive forward and full forward John Lane was in inspirational form as he reeled off four points from play, five in total during the third quarter and build up a six point advantage 2-9 to 1-6 at this stage.

Newmarket played some superb football in the second half, a Michael Kenneally point testimony of this when he burst forward to kick a point from another memorable passage of attacking play. Glanmire hit back with two points but a free flowing Newmarket answered with a brace of points through T.J. Bodie and Tony O’Keeffe. They sealed the issue when Bart Daly added a third goal, eight minutes from time. A resilient Glanmire added two points but fittingly an excellent Newmarket ended the scoring proceedings when David O’Flynn pointed.

Newmarket were defeated by Nemo Rangers, 1-12 to 0-11 in the second round of the Evening Echo Premier Intermediate Football Championship at Coachford, on Saturday evening played in splendid sunshine and as a result bowed out of the competition.

The city side paved the way for victory thanks to a blistering spell in the opening quarter as they rocked Newmarket. The first point arrived in the third minute but John Ryan kicked an equalizer for Newmarket three minutes later. Within a minute Nemo Rangers regained the lead and then added a goal in their next attack. Three further points gave them a clear seven point lead. Newmarket recovered as they impressed in the second quarter. John Ryan converted a free before T.J. Bodie added two points. Another John Ryan free reduced the deficit to a goal before Gerard Casey added Newmarket’s fifth point in a row. As the half concluded Nemo were on target from a free to turn over in front by 1-6 to 0-6 at the halfway mark.

The sides exchanged points upon the resumption, John Ryan replying to an early Nemo score. The city side regained the initiative again and proved more clinical in front of goal as Newmarket kicked a series of wides. During a ten minute spell they added five points to enjoy an eight point advantage. To their credit, Newmarket battled back and finished the game strongly. John Ryan added his fifth point before Kevin O’Sullivan surged forward to kick a point. Denys O’Brien drove forward relentlessly in the closing minutes and was rewarded with two further points. However, Newmarket ran out of time and were four points in arrears at the end of the contest.

Newmarket must now go through a relegation play off involving four second round losers. Two semi finals will be played where the two victors will preserve their Premier Intermediate status. The two losing semi finalists will contest a play off final and again the winners will be safe but the losing finalists will be relegated.

This represents the last chance for both sides to progress in this year’s championship, with the losers of this tie faced with the prospect of a relegation battle. Newmarket were defeated by St. Vincent’s by 0-8 to 0-5 in their first round outing in Mallow on April 13th while Nemo Rangers succumbed to Newcestown.

The sides have already met in the league when Newmarket travelled to Nemo Rangers on March 8th where they suffered a heavy defeat by 1-15 to 0-4.

The most recent championship meeting between the sides was on May 26th, 2004 at Macroom where again the city side emerged clear winners by 1-14 to 1-3.

Newmarket suffered a disappointing defeat against St. Vincent’s by 0-8 to 0-5 in the opening round of the Premier Intermediate football championship game played at Mallow on Monday evening.

The city outfit got out the blocks instantly and aided by a significant breeze pointed from distance within seconds of the throw in. Both sides tried to settle in the early stages but a scrappy encounter developed for the duration of the game. Newmarket enjoyed a few forays towards their opponent’s goal before David O’Flynn kicked an equalizer in the tenth minute. The physically superior St. Vincent’s side took a grip and made their superiority pay by adding three unanswered points in eight minutes. Newmarket improved and John Ryan converted a free in the twenty third minute, however despite enjoying possession deep in the opposition territory they failed to add to their scoring tally. St. Vincents added a fifth point to turn over in front by 0-5 to 0-2 at the interval but Newmarket were well in contention considering the advantageous breeze.

Similar to the opening half, it was St. Vincent’s who began with an early score. Newmarket struggled to impose themselves and indeed it was the city team that took a firm stranglehold on matters as two further scores gave them a six point advantage, twelve minutes into the half. Amazingly this proved to be their final score of the game as they seemed to settle for defending their lead and see out the remainder of the contest. Newmarket did respond and were rewarded by a quick flurry of points with three scores in as many minutes, two John Ryan frees sandwiched between a point from Denys O’Brien. Newmarket endeavoured hard to the finish but failed to add to their tally in a scoreless final twelve minutes. St. Vincent’s defended everything Newmarket could muster, despite the driving influences of Mark Reidy and Barry O’Leary amongst others. The game petered out to a tame conclusion and Newmarket must now regroup for a knockout second round tie against Nemo Rangers.

Newmarket’s intermediate football team were defeated by Kildorrery by the narrowest of margins, 1-13 to 1-12 in an entertaining league contest played at Newmarket on Sunday afternoon.

Newmarket played with the aid of a strong breeze in the opening half and took a third minute lead thanks to a fine score from impressive midfielder Kevin O’Sullivan. T.J. Bodie doubled the advantage in the tenth minute before an excellent move involving Gerard Casey, Kevin O’Sullivan and David O’Flynn, ended with the latter charging through the Kildorrery rearguard and he slotted the ball into the bottom corner of the net. Kevin O’Sullivan added a point as Newmarket established a six point lead. Kildorrery scored their first point of the contest but the excellent Tony O’Keeffe chipped in with two points from play for Newmarket. Kildorrery were next to score but a well moving Newmarket side responded with two more points from Bart Daly and Tony O’Keeffe. The Avondhu side ended the half with the last two points and Newmarket turned over in front by 1-7 to 0-4.

Kildorrery got off to the best possible start upon the resumption and struck for a goal with the first twenty seconds. This buoyed on their efforts and assisted by the breeze they went on to score four unanswered points to edge into the lead twelve minutes into the second half.

Newmarket responded and produced a five minute scoring spree of their own. Tony O’Keeffe tied the sides for the second time with his third point of the hour. Bart Daly produced a piece of individual magic and at the end of a magnificent solo run he clipped the ball over the bar. David O’Flynn kicked a memorable point before Kevin O’Sullivan gave Newmarket a three point lead with little over ten minutes to play. Kildorrery replied and they gained parity by scoring three unanswered points. T.J. Bodie restored a Newmarket lead but the momentum was with Kildorrery and they finished strongly by tieing the sides for a fourth time before claiming victory in the dying stage of the contest.
