Narrow loss for senior footballers

Glanworth came to Newmarket on a bright Sunday morning, in Round 3 of the Cork Credit Unions county football league.

The visitors opened their account early on, with a brace of scores, but their efforts were cancelled out on seven minutes, when full-forward Ryan O’Keeffe put his side ahead with a well taken goal. Glanworth regained the lead and despite scores from Conor and Ryan O’Keeffe, the home side trailed by a point on 25 minutes. Moments later the Avondhu outfit put a distance between the sides, netting a goal of their own. Points from play from the boot of Ryan and Darren O’Keeffe kept the hosts in contention, but they trailed, 1-04 to 1-07, at the short whistle.

A strong start to the second period saw Newmarket narrow the gap to just a point, with scores from play through Conor (2) and Ryan O’Keeffe. Matching the visitors score for score, again with Conor and Ryan O’Keeffe to the fore, Newmarket were unable to draw level, trailing, 1-10 to 1-11, on 55 minutes. Glanworth doubled their lead moments later and despite an injury time Conor O’Keeffe free, the visitors held out, to win 1-11 to 1-12 on the day.
