Hurlers bow out of league at semi final stage

The hurlers of Newmarket and Millstreet travelled to Meelin to contest the semi final of the Twohig’s Duhallow junior A hurling league on Friday night last, the 20th of August.

The Millstreet men got off to the brighter start, scoring 1-03 early on, with Newmarket registering points through Cathal Browne and Gavin Forde, to trail 0-04 to 1-03 at the first water break. A score from Mikey Browne shortly after, narrowed the gap to a single point, but Millstreet restored their goal lead over the next few minutes. Newmarket replied through Cathal Browne, with Millstreet maintaining their advantage at the interval, to lead 0-07 to 1-07.

On the resumption, an opening brace of scores from Millstreet were cancelled out by points from Michael Cottrell and Gavin Forde. On 39 minutes a Forde free narrowed the gap to just two points. From this stage onwards Millstreet exerted their dominance, scoring 2-04 without reply. A late Conor O’Keeffe point brought Newmarket’s total to 0-11 compared to Millstreet’s 3-14 over the hour. Millstreet now progress to the final, with Newmarket’s attentions turning to the championship.
