Goals the difference, as footballers lose out to Castlehaven
The footballers of Newmarket and Castlehaven headed for Macroom on Sunday afternoon, the 1st of August, to contest the final of the Cork Credit Unions League 2 competition.
The high scoring contest opened with an early Conor O’Keeffe free for Newmarket, which was quickly followed by two Castlehaven points. The first of the match’s five goals came on six minutes, when Kevin O’Sullivan finished well to the back of the Castlehaven net. A Paudie Allen point two minutes later extended his side’s lead, 1-02 to 0-02. A Castlehaven reply was cancelled out by Darren O’Keeffe, before a goal for the Carbery side levelled up the contest. A Conor O’Keeffe point pushed Newmarket ahead briefly, but the match was again all square at the first water break. On the resumption, Castlehaven scored 1-01 in quick succession, with John Ryan replying for Newmarket. A 24th minute penalty for Castlehaven, stretched the margin to six points, 1-05 to 3-05. A brace from Conor O’Keeffe just before half time kept pace with the Carbery men’s scoring, with the six point gap remaining at the break.
Castlehaven registered the first two points of the second half, with John Ryan replying for Newmarket on 37 minutes. The Duhallow men went toe to toe with the opposition, responding to three further Castlehaven scores, through a pair of frees from Conor O’Keeffe and a point from play from Darren O’Keeffe, coming on 53 minutes. Despite Newmarket’s efforts to reel in the Castlehaven men, a final goal on 55 minutes meant they trailed 1-11 to 4-12, with time almost up. Late Newmarket points from Conor O’Keeffe and John Ryan brought their team’s total to 1-14, but Castlehaven secured the league title having scored 4-15 over the hour.
