Newmarket progress to meet near neighbours Glenlara in Junior B championship
Newmarket Junior B footballers got off to a good start in the Junior B Football Championship on Friday night last away to Kiskeam. In wet and slippy conditions Newmarket emerged winners on a score line of 0-11 to 0-2 to progress to a quarter final against near neighbours Glenlara.
Newmarket got off to an excellent start in the game with Shane Congo Murphy pointing from a free after 5 minutes. Conditions proved testing for both sides and Newmarket were particularly guilty of some very poor shooting throughout the hour. Eddie Allen and Jacko Flaherty kicked the next two in the game to leave Newmarket leading 0-3 to no score after 17 minutes.
Kiskeam responded with a point but Newmarket finished the half stronger with Seanie Francis O’ Connor and Shane Anthony Murphy kicking two further points to leave the score line 0-5 to 0-1 at the interval.
The second half did not see any improvement in terms of the shooting as it took ten minutes for Newmarket to register the first score of the game via a Seanie Francis point. This was followed by a John Cronin point three minutes later to make the score 0-7 to 0-1. Kiskeam pegged back a point but the final quarter saw Newmarket gain greater control and three Eddie Allen points and one Shane Congo Murphy point saw Newmarket win 0-11 to 0-2.
The Newmarket rearguard performed excellently with John McSweeney, Brendan Stack and Kevin O’ Connor particularly outstanding. Shane Anthony Murphy and Jacko Flaherty operated as excellent link men to the forwards while up front Eddie Allen dispatched any chance he got to finish with a tally four points.
