Newmarket minors claim victory against Kanturk
Newmarket travelled to Kanturk on Monday evening to take on the home side and ended the game by claiming their first league victory by 0-14 to 1-6.
Kanturk began the better side and took and early two point lead. Newmarket got back on level terms when Ian Flanagan scored from two converted frees. Kanturk gained the lead again through a brace of points. Newmarket finished the half strongly and points from Ian Flanagan and Darren O’Keeffe restored parity with less than five minutes remaining. Newmarket took the lead for the first time when Darren O’Keeffe kicked a fine point from play and they ended the half in front by 0-5 to 0-4.
Newmarket maintained their momentum in the second half and impressed as they increased their lead through points by Jeremiah Lane, Eddie Allen and two more from Ian Flanagan. The game took a significant twist at the end of the first quarter when Kanturk struck for a goal and just two points separated the sides at this stage 0-9 to 1-4. The sides went on to exchange a couple of points with Ian Flanagan again on target. Newmarket pushed on as the game entered the final ten minutes and the prolific Ian Flanagan pointed twice with Darren O’Keeffe also on target. Kanturk replied with a point but Ian Flanagan ended the scoring to seal a Newmarket victory.
Newmarket were well served by a number of fine displays including goalkeeper David Quinlan, Brendan Stack and Anthony Lynch.
